Symphony Hall

The Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (BPYO), composed of musicians age 12-21 from the East Coast, performs their final concert of the 2023-24 season under the baton of Founder and Conductor Benjamin Zander. The program opens with Robert Schumann’s Cello Concerto followed by Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 5, which will also be performed during the BPYO’s five-city European tour from June 15-25. The concert can be experienced both in-person and via livestream.
Schumann's soul-stirring Cello Concerto features the virtuosic talents of cellist Zlatomir Fung, the youngest cellist ever to win First Prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition. As Artist-in-Residence with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in the 2023-24 season, Fung has appeared at London’s Cadogan Hall and is touring the UK with the orchestra. The 25-year-old has been hailed as one of the most promising young cellists of his generation: in describing his recital debut at Carnegie Hall in 2021, Bachtrack wrote "[He is] one of those rare musicians with a Midas touch: he quickly envelopes every score he plays in an almost palpable golden aura.” He last appeared with the BPYO in concert in 2022 as soloist on Elgar’s Cello Concerto and toured with the BPYO to Greece in June that year. The Westborough, MA native is a graduate of The Julliard School where he is also currently a faculty member.
Along with Dvořák’s and Elgar’s Cello Concertos, the Schumann is one of the great Romantic works for cello. “Schumann’s Cello Concerto requires an interpreter of the highest order,” says Zander. “Its moods are intimate, soulful, and confessional, almost like chamber music, and its three connected movements are like one long-drawn breath of lyricism that virtually cries out for Zlatomir’s subtlety and communicative power.”
Zander’s profound connection to Mahler's music has earned him significant recognition, including the very first Titan Award from the Mahler Society of New York. His passion for Mahler's compositions infuses every note with a profound sense of meaning and emotion.

The tree planting is taking place along the boardwalk between Beech Tree Park and the boat launch parking lot. This is an area where a number of dead trees have been removed over the last few years. In addition, there has been a concerted effort to remove invasive plants from the area as well. The new trees, red maples and river birch will aid in absorbing excess water during heavy rain events and add native plants back to the area.
With regards to the invasive species removal, we are attempting to create an “adopt a tree” initiative where people can monitor a tree during the growing months to ensure that no invasive are growing on our around it. People can choose to adopt anywhere from 1-5 trees (or more if they so desire). The removal day event will give you hands-on experience. Please bring durable gloves and clippers if you have them, and it is suggested that you wear long sleeves and pants to prevent being exposed to poison ivy.

The program includes Overture in D Minor by Emilie Mayer, Overture on Hebrew Themes by Prokofiev, and Beethoven's Triple Concerto.&nbsp;

Andrew Ho has been playing the piano for eleven years. During his time at the piano, he has studied a wide range of repertoire and genres, including the entire Book II of the Well-Tempered Clavier. Notable other examples include: Liszt’s Harmonies du Soir, Barber’s Ballade Op. 46, and Prokofiev’s Concerto in C Major Op. 26: Andante — Allegro.&nbsp;He has won numerous awards for both music theory and solo piano 
Ayaan Ahmad is a 17-year-old Bangladeshi-American violinist from Sharon, Massachusetts. Ayaan was accepted into and attended the Perlman Music Program for two summers, performing and working with world-renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman and other esteemed faculty.
 Lazar Kaminsky is an 18-year-old cellist based in the Boston area. His most notable accomplishments include winning the Academia Internacional de Música de Solsona (AIMS) Festival Concerto as well as first and special prize in the International New York Solo Competition.

St. Timothy Church&nbsp;Is hosting an Electronics Recycling Event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday June 15. The collection event will be held in the church parking lot at 650 Nichols&nbsp;Street.
All electronics, appliances, items with a plug and/or batteries, as well as bicycles in any condition will be accepted and recycled for a small cost as follows:

Computer hard drives will be destroyed during the recycling process, but can be removed on-site at the event for an additional charge. Cash payment is preferred, but checks will be an acceptable form of payments over $30.
