Sharon firefighters responded to three brush fires over the past week, as dry, windy and warm conditions continue.
Brush fires remain a threat to Sharon and much of Southern New England due to the continued dry, windy and warm weather, the National Weather Service said today. The agency has issued a red flag warning from noon to 8 p.m. today for "most of Massachusetts except Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, most of Rhode Island except Block Island, Northern Connecticut and Southern New Hampshire." Gusts of 10 to 20 mph, approaching 30 mph in some places, are expected, along with temperatures in the 70s, the agency said. Cooler temperatures return Friday.
Sharon residents Thursday brought their spring jackets out of mothballs, but really needed Windbreakers. Yet, no brush fires had been reported here as of 4 p.m., despite the ripe conditions, according to the Sharon Fire Department. Sharon reached a high temperature of 65 degrees -- 23 degrees warmer than March 8, 2011, and 20 degrees above normal for the day, according to AccuWeather's website. The region also saw wind gusts that turned trash cans into road obstacles. A National Weather Service spotter reported a 51 mph gust in Franklin at 2:10 p.m., according to the agency's website.
