Weekend Preview: The Friends of Borderland have 2 events this weekend.

Tour the Mansion and enjoy a night of Astronomy.

  The Friends of Borderland, 257 Massapoag Avenue are having 2 events on Sunday, Nov 18. There will be tours of the Ames Mansion from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Volunteer guides conduct tours which will be every 20 minutes for adults and older children. Explore the history of the Ames Mansion while supporting the Friends of Borderland. A $3. donation, per person is requested. Rain or shine. In 2009, the Department of Conservation and Recreation did a major restoration of the interior and exterior of the mansion. In 2011 the DCRCommissioner, Edward Lambert Jr. announced that the department was committing $500,000 for the completion of the year long restoration. Sharon Cross Country Falls to Oliver Ames Tigers

OA boys and girls beat Sharon at Borderland State Park on Tuesday.

Oliver Ames Cross Country squared off against Sharon at Boarderland State Park on Tuesday. Both the boys and girls won their meets to remain undefeated and capture the Davenport Division of the Hockomock League for the third year in a row. The boys won, 26-31 and the girls won 20-43. The Fall Festival over at the Blue Hills Trailside Museum continues today with a celebration of fall. The Sharon Middle School Grade 6 open house is at 6 p.m. 4. From 6-7:45 p.m., the Sharon Public Library will host Promoting National Financial Planning Week with The Financial Planning Association of Massachusetts in the Cynthia B. Fox Community Room at the Sharon Public Library. 5. Borderland State Park offers a Mass Senior Pass for those over age 62 years old. The pass allows free parking for the vehicle occupied by the pass holder, whether they are driving or a passenger. Passes are available at all parks that charge a parking fee.

Borderland Mansion to Undergo Renovations This Summer

The first phase began last week.

The former home of Oakes and Blanche Ames on Massapoag Avenue in Sharon and Easton will receive a facelift this spring and summer. The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation announced plans for restoration last week as part of "Preservation Month." The first phase, including $75,000 of work on the third floor, will address damage caused by leaks. The work will include lead paint removal and asbestos abatement, replacement of plumbing lines, ceiling repair and painting, DCR said in a press release. The second phase, which will include remaining masonry work to address chronic water leaks, will be completed by the end of August, DCR said. The cost of the second phase will be assessed following the review of bid submittals. …

Joyce Testifies For Borderland Trust Fund Bill

His legislation would help preserve and restore the park in Easton and Sharon.

A Borderland State Park Trust Fund to help preserve and restore the Easton and Sharon landmark will be created if state lawmakers pass legislation filed by state Sen. Brian Joyce. Joyce (D-Milton) recently testified before the Joint Committee on Revenue in support of his bill, his office said in a press release today. His district includes parts of both towns. Borderland fee, license and permit revenue would go into the fund, which would be spent with the Borderland Advisory Council's advice, Joyce said.

Sharon Girls Cross-Country Sees Progress

The Sharon High School girls cross-country team heads to Saturday's Hockomock League Championships with a math challenge. The Eagles have fewer runners than many of their opponents. And while Sharon runners have finished first or in the top five at several meets this fall, the competition has won meets by out-numbering them. Junior Caroline Sun, who captains the team with classmate Sami Kaplan, says winning Saturday at the 3.1-mile course at Borderland State Park in Easton will be "difficult, but our underclassmen are definitely improving."  "They're filling those other spots.
