GOP and Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate debated Wednesday night at the Channel 5 studios in Needham.
In the days leading up to the first Democratic U.S. Senate debate, U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) has been called upon frequently to explain the vote he took against the health care reform bill in 2010. Wednesday night, Lynch and U.S. Rep. Ed Markey (D-Malden) went several rounds on the topic. They faced-off for 30 minutes at the Channel 5 studios in Needham following a contest among the three declared Republican candidates. The Republican candidates for U.S. Senate leaned on their diverse backgrounds to explain positions on issues ranging from the economy and debt reduction to gay marriage Wednesday night. Gabriel Gomez, a former Navy SEAL and businessman from Cohasset, said that hearing from a variety of perspectives served him well in the military and that he would bring those lessons to bear working with fellow Republicans and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. Harvey Leonard recently appeared in a segment to explain the findings of global warming studies and other data on climate change.
Sharon resident Paul Lauenstein was among a handful of WCVB viewers to visit the network's Senior Meteorologist Harvey Leonard this week. Lauenstein, along with Lexington resident Nancy Nolan, delivered a card to Leonard, celebrating his climate change communications. Leonard appeared in a segment in early February to explain the connection between global warming and severe weather patterns, and to discuss how global warming is driving more drought, more heavy precipitation and stronger storms. More than 570 viewers co-signed the thank you card that Nolan and Lauenstein delievered on Tuesday, March 12. Earlier this week, Sharon resident Jason Wolfe accepted the 2012 Global Lung Cancer Coalition Journalism Award on behalf of Sports Radio WEEI 93.7 this week. Wolfe, Vice President of Programming and Operations for Entercom Boston, accepted the award at the Shine a Light on Lung Cancer Vigil in Boston on Tuesday, Nov. 13. WCVB News Anchor Heather Unruh emceed the event, while Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots did the honor of “flipping the switch”, turning the top of the Prudential building into a brilliant blue to shine a light on lung cancer throughout Boston.
