Master Sergeant Carin Smith Awarded the Deborah Sampson Award

The award was given on Saturday in front of the statue of Deborah Sampson at the Sharon Public Library.

Master Sergeant Carin Smith was presented with the 2012 Deborah Sampson Award with a state citation this past Veterans Day weekend. The award is presented to a woman who dressed as a man to fight in the Revolutionary War. Smith, a Plymouth resident, served in the Massachusetts Army National Guard for more than two decades before retiring in May 2011. She was deployed to Kawai in 2005 to 2006 during Operation Iraqi Freedom. After retiring she continued working with veterans, volunteering to care for soldiers and veterans. She volunteers at the Plymouth Career Center and Nathan Hale Veterans Foundation and Badger Basecamp. Schools are closed today in honor of Veterans Day.

1. Sharon schools and the town's library are closed today. How about going to Borderland State Park for a stroll around the beautiful grounds. Week In Review: Sharon Celebrates Two Holidays

Sharon Patch looks back at its top stories from the past week.

Sharon Delivers Tribute To Veterans

Veterans Day celebration in Post Office Square attracts large crowd.

Veterans and those currently enlisted looked around Sharon's Post Office Square just before and after noon today, Veterans Day. They saw people everywhere. "If you look around, look over your left shoulder and your right shoulder, up front and in back, and you will see that this is the town of Sharon," Deputy Police Chief J.J. McGrath told the soldiers. "The town of Sharon is here today to show their appreciation for your sacrifice and your service, whether you served in peacetime or wartime, when you put on that uniform, you knew you might have to sacrifice all." Expanded Sharon Veterans Day Program Approaches

Military artifacts and vehicles will be displayed during Friday's celebration in Post Office Square.

Sharon residents enjoyed the blues during the last town celebration in Post Office Square. Friday, they'll return there to salute the red, white and blues. Sharon's expanded Veterans Day celebration is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A Sharon selectman will say a few words, a Sharon clergy member will give the invocation, and Sharon Boy Scouts will raise the flag at the Bank of America as the Sharon High School Select Choir sings the National Anthem, Deputy Police Chief J.J. McGrath said Wednesday. McGrath and Veterans Agent Paul Bergeron are the celebration's leading organizers.
