Two-Alarm Fire Causes Extensive Damage to Stoughton Home on Christmas Eve A two-alarm fire caused extensive damage to a home on Kenmore Road in Stoughton on Christmas Eve, according to Stoughton Fire Department officials, but there were no reported injuries to any of the home's occupants or to the first responders who were on scene. Abundant research confirms that girls start losing interest in science during middle school or earlier and the result is a dearth of women working in science, technology, engineering, and math. In 2009, only 24 percent of scientists and engineers were women, according to the Census Bureau’s 2009 American Community Survey. A new weeklong chemistry camp for 40 middle school girls will be held at the University of Rhode Island’s Kingston campus during the April public school vacation in 2013 and 2014. Student Alyssa Zisk is spending the summer in Shanghai. She's triple-majoring in applied math, mechanical engineering and Chinese at the university.
Some might consider triple majoring in applied math, mechanical engineering and Chinese a tough academic mountain to climb. Sharon resident Alyssa Zisk is in Shanghai, China this summer through the University of Rhode Island's Chinese Language Flagship Partner Program, "a federally-funded intensive undergraduate program for highly motivated students preparing for global careers, (which) is designed to prepare greater numbers of Americans to be highly proficient in languages that are critical to national security and competitiveness. URI is one of only nine universities selected for this program nation-wide," according to a URI press release. Zisk is a sophomore.
