Despite an initial forecast of 1-3 inches of snow, Sharon may get a little more than expected.
Originally thought to be a small storm that would drop only 3-5 inches of snow in Sharon, a new forecast from WHDH shows the town getting closer to six or more inches through Friday in the area. In addition, the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Norfolk County until 1 p.m. Friday. The warning claims the potential for anywhere from 4-8 inches of snow in the area, with a low probability of 10 inches in some isolated areas. According to the warning, the heaviest accumulations are expected tonight into Friday morning but some accumulations will occur today especially across the elevated interior areas of southeast Massachusetts. Winds are expected to hit 15 to 25mph, with gusts up to 45mph. Some power outages were…

Weather forecasters are predicting at least six inches of snow with a foot of snow possible.
Will Sharon get pummeled this weekend with several inches of snow or will rain be mixed in? The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch from Saturday afternoon through Sunday afternoon. The NWS said 6 inches of snow or more is possible and warned of heavy wet snow that may fall at 1 to 2 inches per hour. Snow may mix with rain in the Sharon area. The NWS warned that the heavy wet snow could bring down tree limbs and result in scattered power outages. Snowfall estimates for the Sharon area as of Friday range from 6 to 10 inches, according to reports. Channel 7 meteorologist Pete Bouchard wrote on his weather blog: Storm start-up still looks like Saturday afternoon. We'll still be able to get around and the amounts will be …

Do you agree with the governor's decision or was it too drastic?
All non-emergency drivers were ordered off the roads on Friday when Gov. Deval Patrick issued an executive order banning travel during the blizzard. (Editor's note: The ban is lifted statewide as of 4 p.m. Saturday.) Patrick's executive order is being praised by some and bashed by others, reported The Boston Globe. While former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis, who was in charge of the commonwealth during the Blizzard of ’78, praised the governor’s move, others called the order “tyrannical” and say the strict ban and hefty fines were too much, according to The Globe. Those caught violating the ban would face up to a year in jail and a $500 fine. What do you think? Do you agree with the governor’s decision or do you think the travel ban …

Let's measure the blizzard through lawn ornaments!
We at Patch like to have fun – even when we’re covering a story as big as the Blizzard of ’13! So when the biggest storm in years (potentially in the history of Boston weather) is headed our way, we get into battle mode – and even get a little silly. That’s what this idea is about – and we want you to take part too! A fun way we want to track the storm across Massachusetts is through lawn ornaments. They serve a purpose in the spring and summer, but often feel left out in the cold of winter. Not anymore. We are posting photos of lawn ornaments throughout Massachusetts to highlight snowfall across the commonwealth during and after the storm. All you need to do is hit the Upload Photos and Videos button and upload your own. If we’re stuck at…
With another historic blizzard hitting Massachusetts, let's take a look back at the Blizzard of '78.
The Blizzard of ’78 has to be the most photographed and videoed winter storm in New England history. Images of stranded cars, battered coastlines and children playing in giant snowdrifts are all vivid memories of that historic storm. As New Englanders, we commemorated the 35th anniversary of the storm earlier this week – and now Mother Nature is celebrating herself with what could be one of the biggest snowstorms in history. As we hunker down for this storm, let’s take a look back at the Blizzard of ’78. Here are some fun videos from TV and radio broadcasts before, during and after the storm, as well as home movies on YouTube… Let’s start off with the TV news weather reports Here’s a radio broadcast from WBZ An old WEEI broadcast during …
A blizzard warning is in effect until 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9.
OK, so that two feet of snow we were preparing to get last night? Better add another foot to that. The National Weather Service on Friday morning adjusted its predicted snowfall totals to three feet. The timing of the snowfall is roughly the same: with light snow falling in Worcester, Middlesex and Norfolk counties Friday morning, and becoming heavy later in the afternoon and into the Friday evening commute. So, as WHDH meteorologist Jeremy Reiner notes in his blog, you have a "few hours left this morning" to run some errands, but travel will deteriorate this afternoon. By 7 tonight, most towns will have 2 to 4 inches, Reiner predicted. The storm should be the worst from 7 p.m. Friday to noon tomorrow, when snow could fall at a rate of 2…

The area should see 2 to 5 inches Saturday.
The National Weather Service is advising parts of Southern New England, including Sharon, to expect plowable snow Saturday. The agency has issued a winter weather advisory for accumulating snow from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday. The directive covers Eastern Massachusetts, as well as Rhode Island and Eastern Connecticut, according to its website. The Sharon area should see 3 to 5 inches of snow Saturday, the agency said. AccuWeather's website predicts Sharon getting about 3.6 inches of snow. It's the first substantial snowfall here since Jan. 21, when about four inches fell, causing several motor vehicle accidents in town. Saturday's high temperature will be around 36 degrees, starting a chilly weekend that will see the mercury top out at 25 …

Civil Defense Department seeks to raise awareness of Sharon's emergency radio station.
Listening to AM radio before, during or after Sharon's Square Jam on Thursday may make residents feel safer during a storm. Sharon's Civil Defense Department will use its emergency station, AM 1630, on Thursday as it would if an emergency accident closed Post Office Square, the Square Jam's site. The station will broadcast a Square Jam emergency 911 parking message from noon to either 10 or 11 p.m., Civil Defense Director Michael Polimer and fellow volunteer Chuck Levine said Tuesday. The small all-volunteer department also will have signs directing motorists to tune into the station for this information. “Because of the nature of Square Jam, we basically block off the square,” Polimer said. “If we had an area that we wanted to block off, …
