Sharon Vote Faciliates South Main Traffic Upgrades

Fall special town meeting voters allowing selectmen to get land near Shaw's Plaza and Gavin's Pond Road.

Traffic signals will come to South Main Street at Shaw's Plaza and Sharon Commons thanks to a vote at Monday night's fall special town meeting. By a two-thirds majority, voters authorized selectmen to acquire about 500 square feet of land near Shaw's Plaza and Gavin's Pond Road by eminent domain or purchase. Voters also authorized spending about $12,000 for this purpose. Town Counsel Richard Gelerman told voters that Sharon and the owner of Shaw's Plaza and Sharon Commons developer the Congress Group had a verbal agreement as of town meeting. The Congress Group has agreed to reimburse Sharon the cost of acquiring that land, Gelerman told voters in the Sharon High School auditorium. State Grant Sought For South Sharon Infrastructure Program

$3.5 million eyed for Old Post Road work; private funding expected for another $3 million in South Main Street upgrades.

Sharon officials hope to secure a $3.5 million state grant toward $6.5 million in road improvements in the South Main Street area near Shaw's Plaza. Private funding would support the $3 million balance of the South Sharon Infrastructure Program, including a traffic signal at South Main at Gavin's Pond Road, consultant Ken Caputo told selectmen Tuesday night. Selectmen voted to support pursuing the $3.5 million MassWorks Infrastructure grant for creating a new section of Old Post Road, across from Shaw's Plaza. Applications are due Sept. 16. The grant program is a state Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development initiative.
