Sharon Patch chatted with Kasparian to see how she is liking her new job.
Sharon Recreation Department recently pegged some hometown talent as their newest assistant director. Christine Kasparian, 28, started her new job last month and will use her background in performing arts to bring diversity to the programs offered by the department. "I actually come from a pretty intensive educator's background. I've been educating through my performing arts studio called LiveLoveMusic Performing Arts and I would put together performing arts programs throughout New England," Kasparian said. "So, I have a really strong background on how to be creative, but also how to be organized. So, putting those together created the perfect job here for me," she said. Kasparian is a graduate of Bridgewater State University. She also …

Amanda Deni was recently promoted from Interim Recreation Director after several years working as an assistant for the department.
Life working in the Sharon Recreation Department is nothing new for Amanda Deni. But in the last several months, Deni has had the chance to see the department from a new light, having taken on the role of Interim Recreation Director last summer prior to being appointed as the new full-time recreation director on Dec. 1, 2012. "It was a great learning experience," Deni said of her interim role. "I got to learn about the director's role more than I did being an assistant. We do a lot of similar tasks, however being a department head is a little different. It was crazy, but good." Sharon officials said Deni was an easy and welcome choice for the role, which was left vacant by former director Brett MacGowan last summer. "She ably …

Retired director Dave Clifton will be one of the five members.
Sharon's search for a new recreation director will include a five-member screening committee -- including retired longtime director Dave Clifton. Selectmen established the committee Tuesday night as defined in Sharon's personnel bylaws. Clifton will be one of the two at-large representatives on the committee, both appointed by selectmen. Town Administrator Benjamin Puritz and one representative each from the personnel board and the recreation advisory committee will round out the group. Recreation Director Brett MacGowan resigned about two weeks ago, ending just over four years in the post. Selectmen Chairman William Heitin said Tuesday night that MacGowan "left to pursue other opportunities." MacGowan began his fifth year in Sharon in …

Recreation Advisory Committee introducing interim director next week.
Sharon Recreation Director Brett MacGowan has resigned, ending just over four years in the post, Recreation Advisory Committee Chairman Gary Bluestein said today. Bluestein referred Sharon Patch to Town Administrator Benjamin Puritz for details. Puritz is away, handling a personal matter, town officials said. Assistant Recreation Director Amanda Deni will serve as interim director until a new director is hired, Bluestein said. The Recreation Advisory Committee plans to introduce the interim director at its meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 19 at the Sharon Community Center, according to the agenda posted at the Sharon Town Offices. The Sharon Recreation Department offices are in the community center. MacGowan began his fifth year in Sharon …

Sharon Recreation's Summer Kickoff Celebration at Veteran's Memorial Park Beach drew a large crowd of kids for karaoke, face painting, and even a cannonball contest.
Some Sharon kids hoped to see a 10 today, when the temperature hit around 95. A cannonball contest was among the highlights of Sharon Recreation's Summer Kickoff Celebration at Veteran's Memorial Park Beach. Recreation summer staff judged the leaps and held up their scores. Cool, eh? Staying cool on the first day of summer was one of the goals of the festivities, which included karoake on the bandstand, and face painting, and hacky sack decorating led by Sharon Health Department interns Kseniya Levina, Jessica Twombley and Joseph Lai. Beach concessionaire Said "Felix" Safai cooked up Mediterranean food and traditional summer treats. Hotter weather -- approaching 100 degrees -- is expected Thursday, according to the National Weather Service…

Veterans Memorial Park Beach officially opens on weekends this Saturday. The daily schedule begins after Sharon's last day of school.
The summer-like weather brought swimmers and sunbathers back to Sharon's Veterans Memorial Park Beach this weekend. The welcome mat officially hits the beach for the season this Saturday. Part four, on Stephen Sondheim, is April 12. Both sessions run from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Sharon Community Center. Vandalism, late parking, weather concern board.
The Memorial Park Beach gates will closed for the season despite a 21-resident petition asking to park there to use the facility. Selectmen on Tuesday night took no action on the request. Selectman William Heitin said his biggest concerns about re-opening the gates were vehicles parked there late as the gates were to close, the potential for inclement winter weather, and vandalism, "which has come down dramatically" since the gates closed at the beach, at Beach and Pond streets. Recreation Director Brett MacGowan said today selectmen directed him Nov. 1 to close the gates. The gates actually closed just before Thanksgiving, due to work on the bandstand, he said. A group of 21 residents, led by Maskwonicut Street resident Julia Wood, …
