Friends of Sharon Public Library Preparing for Annual Used Book Sale

Last year the sale raised $7,000 for the Sharon Public Library.

The Friends of the Sharon Public Library were busy Tuesday afternoon organizing the thousands of books that will be for sale at their annual used book sale next week. The book sale will run from Thursday May 16 to Sunday May 19. “It’s open to the community and we are now collecting books for the sale,” said Mary Alice Dowdell, member of the Friends group. Proceeds of the sale will go to library programs and projects. Book prices range from $.25 to $2.00. Last year, Dowdell said they raised about $7,000 and had about 25,000 books for sale. They are expecting several hundred people at this year's sale. The Thursday and Friday sales will be for members of the Friends only and then Saturday and Sunday are open to the public. For more …

Please note this correction: The sale is open to members only on both Thursday and Friday. The public is welcome on Saturday and Sunday. On Thursday from 2-5pm only children's books are on sale. Looking to clear out some old books, DVDs or CDs? Donate them to the Friends of the Sharon Public Library for the upcoming spring book sale. Find out when to donate and when to shop.

Did you know that November is Family Literacy Month?

  1. The Cottage Street School gets a visit from WHDH-TV's Meteorologist Jeremy Reiner who will bring wealth of knowledge and experience in weather forecasting back home to New England. A native of the Berkshires, Jeremy has always been fascinated with the New England climate. Whether it was a raging nor'easter or a chilly sea breeze in April, Jeremy loved it all. So much so, that he attended Lyndon State college in Vermont where he received a B.S. degree in meteorology in 1993. 2. There's Family Literacy Roundtable at the Sharon Public Library from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. This program is open to librarians and library workers. November is Family Literacy month. Open Studios at the Sharon Public Library

Local Artisans open their studios.

  The Friends of the Sharon Public Library, the Sharon Arts Association and the Sharon Public Library presented Open Studios over the weekend. There were more than a half dozen studios of Sharon artists who opened their doors for the public to view their work and ask questions about their inspiration and techniques. Following the tour, there was a reception at the Sharon Public Library with refreshments and other artists' works on display. SHARON PATCH PROFILE: Sharon Artist Dorothy Brenner Appel

Her specialties are watercolor, oil, wood cuts, pen, ink studies and pastels.

  Dorothy Brenner Appel is 88 years young. Appel started painting over 50 years ago and had her first showing in Cambridge at the Cambridge Art Association. "I started painting as a young child and always loved to go to see art demonstrations. Watching someone do a watercolor painting was fascinating to me. I would go home and do it myself," said Appel. Appel grew up in Somerville, but has lived in Sharon for 52 years with her husband of 62 years, Bill, a retired pharmacist and now at the age of 94, a part time film actor. She teaches five times a week in Brookline, the Sharon Adult Center, the Sharon Community Center and in her home. Contact 781-784-5133 for more information on Appel's classes.
