The sign fits in aesthetically, some officials say.
Sharon's new pizzeria can keep its new sign as delivered, despite being larger than the planning board wanted. The board voted 4-0-1 Wednesday night also to allow the Mangia Trattoria and Pizzeria to add signs for Starbucks and for its hours. The restaurant opened at 21 South Main St. on May 16. "I think it fits aesthetically," planning board member Robert Maidman said. Town Engineer Peter O'Cain said the board had approved a 40 by 24 sign. The actual one is 36 by 48, he said. However, "for me, it's tastefully done," O'Cain said of the larger sign. "When you look at the measurements, you're like, 'Wow, it's much bigger,'" O'Cain said. "But seeing it in place, I thought it looked normal and fit into the area." Mangia owner Steve Fenerjian …

No explanation given.
A planned Sharon Planning Board discussion tonight of a potential zoning amendment regarding Sharon Commons was canceled, Vice Chairman David Milowe said. Milowe did not elaborate. The board was scheduled to hear about the amendment from Tom Houston, a consultant to the town, and discuss it, during tonight's meeting at the Sharon Community Center. Exactly one week ago, the Sharon Zoning Board of Appeals granted developer Sharon CF II LP's request to withdraw its application without prejudice. That request came after acted after a majority of zoning board members indicated they would not support a four-lane road (two each way) requested by Target, one of two potential anchor stores. BJ's Wholesale Club is the other one at the nearly 400,000…

The planning board will discuss a proposed zoning amendment next week.
The fate of Sharon Commons apparently is a moving target. Town consultant Tom Houston will present to the Sharon Planning Board a potential zoning amendment for the project at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Sharon Community Center. The board will discuss the proposed amendment at 8 p.m. The move will happen exactly one week after developer Sharon CF II LP withdrew its zoning board of appeals application without prejudice. Two nights ago, the developer acted after a majority of zoning board members indicated they would not support a four-lane road (two each way) requested by Target, one of two potential anchor stores. BJ's Wholesale Club is the other one at the nearly 400,000-square-foot development eyed for about 59 acres bordered by Old Post …

Robert Maidman has served on the Sharon Council on Aging executive board for almost nine years.
The Sharon Planning Board next week should get a new perspective in its efforts to increase Sharon's affordable housing options. Council on Aging Executive Board member Robert Maidman is unopposed for the five-year term on Tuesday's annual town ballot. Incumbent Susan Price is not seeking re-election. Maidman says serving on the COA board for almost nine years has afforded him "a chance to learn about the town in many ways, from many perspectives," such as diversity and generations. That experience has helped him "see how the town is evolving in ways that generate new requirements that weren't there 10 to 15 years ago," Maidman says. The Sharon High School polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. That "we don't have any affordable…

No contest for selectman as deadline for taking out nomination papers passes.
The deadline for taking out nomination papers for Sharon's annual town election passed today with two incumbents apparently not seeking re-election, and no contest for selectman. Neither planning board member Susan Price nor school committee member Glenn Allen had taken out papers for the May 15 ballot as of 11:30 a.m., 30 minutes before today's noon deadline, according to the town clerk's office. Nomination papers now must be submitted to the Board of Registrars of Voters for certification of names by 5 p.m. Tuesday. The deadline for withdrawing is Tuesday, April 12. The apparent decisions by Price and Allen mean voters will elect two new school committee members, a new planning board member and a new Sharon Public Library trustee. …

Selectman now the only office not drawing multiple candidates.
Sharon School Committee member Mitch Blaustein won't seek another three-year term in May, ending 18 years on the board. Blaustein instead has taken out nomination papers for a five-year term on the planning board, joining Coach Lane resident Cheryl Weinstein and Wilshire Drive resident Robert Maidman. Susan Price is the incumbent. Blaustein said today that he has considered running for planning board "for over a year." He said he would have run last year if the seat drew no interest. "What I don't know, I know I can learn quickly," Blaustein said. Blaustein and Glenn Allen are the incumbent school committee members up for re-election at the May 15 annual town election. Both terms are for three years. Canoe River Road residents Amy Garcia …

As I understand it, Target pretty much had a green light from the Zoning Board before Wednesday, but Target came in with NEW changes to their plan, the most problematic being the additional two lanes. This process has been going on for a long time and I wonder why - after all these meetings - Target decides NOW that they need four lanes. I can't help but think they are either trying to slowly …   more ›
