In what could be the biggest snow storm New England has seen in more than two years, Sharon could be among the communities in Massachusetts to see nearly two feet of the white stuff this weekend. With the lastest forecast, the National Weather Service has issued a blizzard watch for most of eastern Massachusetts including Sharon, calling it a "potential historic winter storm". Residents can expect the potential of snow falling at 3-to-4 inches per hour and wind gusts of more thsan 20 miles per hour. NStar was fined $4 million in responses to Tropical Storm Irene and the October 2011 snowstorm, but already announced it plans to appeal.
The state on Tuesday ordered a total of $24.8 million in penalties to utility companies for their response to storms in 2011. Massachusetts Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rick Sullivan joined Department of Public Utilities (DPU) Chairman Ann Berwick and DPU commissioners today to announce the findings of the DPU’s investigation into responses to Tropical Storm Irene and the October 2011 snowstorm. Provided the penalties hold up, customers should see a reduction in their bill, though it is unclear how much, officials said. National Grid said it is ready to go with more than 500 crews in the event of power outages from Wednesday night's Nor'Easter.
National Grid, the electric utility that had hundreds of thousands of customers without power in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, said it is ready for Wednesday night’s Nor’Easter. The latest storm first moved in on Wednesday morning and is expected to last into Thursday with high winds, heavy rain and some heavy wet snow to the west and north. National Grid said it is ready to respond to any power outages that may occur as a result of the weather. There are more than 500 line and tree crews available and ready to respond to any storm-related outages, plus more than 200 “wires-down” personnel. Legislator urges action on power outage rebate legislation.
A local legislator has called for utility companies to take responsibility for extended outages. State Rep. Daniel Winslow (R-Norfolk) has asked the House Rules Committee to take action on a power outage rebate bill. According to a release from Winslow's office, the bill would require rebates to customers who go without power for more than eight hours. The rebate would be for two days of their average bill for each day the customer is without power. "Right now, more than 90 percent of the residents in Wrentham are without power for an extended period of time for the second time in three months," Winslow said in a statement. NSTAR had 350 Sharon customers without electricity early this morning and expects those outages to end by Friday night. There were 15,382 total customers without power as of 4 a.m., according to the utility's website. Tropical Storm Irene caused the outages Sunday. NSTAR said it anticipates fully restoring Sharon's electricity by 10 p.m. Friday, the same target it had on Tuesday. NSTAR's previous estimate was 12 a.m. Sunday. Meanwhile, National Grid said today that 51 of its 58 Sharon customers remain without power. Most of these outages should end by Friday, with the rest by Sunday, the utility said on its website. Work began Wednesday.
