More Than 5,000 Ride in PMC During 33rd Event

The event welcomed nearly 50 riders from Sharon with a collective goal of raising $36 million for cancer research.

More than 5,400 cyclists took to the road this past weekend as part of the 33rd Annual Pan-Massachusetts Challenge, according to an announcement from the PMC Monday. The ride drew riders from 36 states, including 47 riders from Sharon (four of whom rode with Sen. Scott Brown), as well as nine countries to take part in the event. Cyslists road up to 190 miles over the course of two days with the goal of raising $36 million to help fund research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.  The final sum raised will be announced in November, as donations will be accepted until Oct. 1. Inspiration Drives Four Sharon Residents at PMC

'When you’re with Lenny, you think you can do anything,' Team Lenny member says.

Sharon resident Laura Davis recalls sitting in a board meeting with Lenny Zakim, on his birthday. She remembers Zakim “talking from the heart of losing control, which is the most devastating part of cancer, and Lenny articulating just how complementary therapy allowed him to gain some control back, gave him some piece.” “When you’re with Lenny, you think you can do anything,” Davis says. “He was just such an inspiration to tackle anything, particularly in a grassroots mode.” Over the weekend, Davis and fellow Sharon residents Ed Hershfield, Rich Goldman and Jerry Anderson rode their bicycles in Zakim’s memory to support cancer research. Four Sharon Residents Riding With Brown on PMC Team

They'll all be part of 'Team Lenny.'

Four Sharon residents will join U.S. Sen. Scott Brown for an upcoming two-day Pan-Massachusetts Challenge bicycle ride for cancer research. Laura Davis, Jerry Anderson, Ed Hershfield and Rich Goldman will join Brown (R-Wrentham) on "Team Lenny" for the Leonard P. Zakim Center at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute through the PMC and Jimmy Fund, Anderson said Friday. 2012 Pan-Mass Challenge Draws 47 Sharon Cyclists

Sharon has 47 residents gearing up to ride their bicycles to support cancer research. The residents will ride in the 33rd Annual Pan-Massachusetts Challenge, set for Aug. 4 and Aug. 5, organizers said in a press release Thursday. The fundraiser will involve 5,500 cyclists trying to raise $36 million total to support adult and pediatric cancer research and treatment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund, according to the press release. "Cyclists choose from 11 routes of varying mileage designed to cater to all levels of cycling strength and time availability.
