Military members, veterans and their spouses can now
Sharon NORWOOD-Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray announced at Memorial Hall in Norwood Monday new regulations to help make it easier for military members and their families to attain professional licenses. The announcement is part of “An Act Relative to Veterans’ Access, Livelihood, Opportunity, and Resources” (VALOR Act), signed by Governor Deval Patrick in 2012, which requires departments of state government to establish military friendly practices for licensing. “As our military servicemen and women sacrifice their lives for our country they also gain tremendous and unique job training skills that should never be overlooked when seeking employment,” said Lieutenant Governor Murray, Chair of the Governor’s Advisory Council on Veterans’ …

Governor Deval Patrick addressed the Neponset Valley Chamber of Commerce to discuss how he plans to improve the Commonwealths economic development.
Gov. Deval Patrick spoke to the Neponset Valley Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday to discuss economic opportunities and job growth. The governor said Hurricane Sandy could hit Sunday night and linger into Wednesday.
Gov. Deval Patrick has declared a state of emergency and held a press conference Saturday afternoon to update to the public about how the state is preparing for the impact of Hurricane Sandy. Sandy is currently a category 1 hurricane rolling up the Atlantic and is expected to turn northwest Sunday afternoon. Impact on New England from the storm is expected by Sunday night and could linger until Wednesday. "While we continue to hope for the best, we are planning for the worst," Patrick said. The Chronicle of Philanthropy has released detailed information on philanthropy by state, county, town and zip code.
The percentage of their income Sharon residents give to charity is more than the county, state and country averages, according to a study released Monday. However, those making less in Sharon give the most, percentage-wise. The Chronicle of Philanthropy's "How America Gives" study reported that Sharon residents, with a median discretionary income of $30,551, had a median contribution of 5.6 percent, or an average of $1,714 of their income to charity in 2008, the tax year for which data was collected. By way of comparison, the county, state, and country's median contribution was 3.6 percent, 2.8 percent and 4.7 percent, respectively. (See chart below.)
