Daily Dose: Where Can You Launch a Boat on Lake Massapoag?

Also, get some info on this year's upcoming tour at the Sharon Historical Society from Sharon blogger David G. Nelson.

1. Here is your daily weather forecast, courtesy of WHDH Weather: Mostly cloudy skies with a few showers. Some humidity in the air with temps in the upper 60s. 2. Did you know that residents in Sharon who would like to launch a boat on Lake Massapoag can do so from the town boat ramp at the corner of Beach and Pond Streets? It's true, according to the Sharon Recreation Department. All boats launched need to be 60 horsepower or less, and residents can obtain a boat launch parking pass from the Recreation Department. The boat launch passes are valid for the calendar year. Please visit sharonbeach.cityhallsystems.com to purchase passes. If you have any questions, contact the Assistant Recreation Director Christine Kasparian, at ckasparian@…

The 2012 Sharon Triathlon

Beth Allen of Canton was the second women's finisher in 29th place at 1:23.18.

No rain, only a little sun and very little humidity was a welcomed site for triathletes in the Sharon Triathlon 2012 at Lake Massapoag Sunday. "The Sharon Triathlon has been around for almost 25 years," said race director Tim Richmond, who is in his fifth year. "We have six races in total. Dartmouth, two in Hopkinton, Onset, Sharon and Winchendon. Our oldest athlete today is a 77-year-old man and our youngest is 15-year old girl." Richmond used to compete and says he wanted to bring quality races to Massachusetts. Sunday;s course started with a 1/2 mile swim, a 12.3 mile bike ride which went through the towns of Easton, Mansfield, Focboro and Sharon, ending with a 4.4 mile run. The men's top finishers were Worcester's Craig Mitchell in …

Sharon Firefighters Rescue Kayaker -- Who Called 911 From Water

The victim had received a waterproof cell phone case as an early Father's Day present.

A 911 call about a man whose kayak flipped over on Sharon's Lake Massapoag came directly from the source Sunday. The life jacket-clad victim called the Sharon Fire Department from his cell phone, which was in a waterproof case, an early Father's Day present from his wife, Fire Capt. John McLean said today. "Thankfully, he had that cell phone with him. It was lucky, because we couldn't see him at first. Something that's a foot high is not easy to see," McLean said. "He was able to tell us when he saw the ambulance." The victim wasn't injured in the incident, which he reported at 10:38 a.m. from the Community Center Beach side of the lake, McLean said. McLean was unsure how deep the water was at the victim's location. "He was just in the …

Sharon Voters Say: No Beach Dog Ban Allowed

Selectmen commission study of Lake Massapoag pollution.

With several dog owners saying they didn't see a problem, Sharon voters didn't allow a dog ban at Veterans Memorial Park and Beach Monday night. The voice vote on the Sharon Lake Management Study Committee's annual town meeting proposal followed a roughly 30-minute debate in the Sharon High School auditorium. "Anyone that spends any time at the lake doesn't see dogs as a problem," said one resident, who called himself an avid user of the lake. Lake Management Study Committee member David Deitz said dog droppings are polluting Lake Massapoag's water. They're also "a public health issue" for beach and park visitors who are "playing in the sand and walking in the sand," he said. Selectman William Heitin said selectmen voted before the meeting…

Sharon Town Meeting Rejects Beach Dog Ban, Package Store Plan

Voters resume town meeting at 7 tonight at Sharon High School.

Dogs remain allowed at Sharon's Veterans Memorial Park Beach because voters defeated a proposed ban Monday night. The annual town meeting also said no to allowing Sharon to grant package store licenses. The annual town meeting adjourned around 11:12 p.m. to 7 tonight in the Sharon High School auditorium. Nineteen of the 24 warrant articles remain. The first one involves choosing residents to serve on the finance committee, as recommended by the finance committee nominating committee. Voters on Monday night acted on all four special town meeting articles, as well as the first five annual town meeting ones, ending with the budget. Voters discussed the dog ban proposed by the lake management study committee for about 30 minutes before Town …

Sharon To Walk Through Architectural History

Sharon Historical Society house tour drew more than 100 people in 2010.

Sunday, people will walk through six of Sharon's architectural gems over a four-hour window. From an Underground Railroad stop to a Steampunk-style home recently featured on MTV, the Sharon Historical Society's House Tour 2011 encompasses a variety of building styles -- and a few steps into Sharon's history books. The fundraiser spans from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $20, which gets the guest into all six private homes. Each ticket includes a map. The proceeds benefit the historical society. The historical society runs the fundraiser periodically, member David Nelson says. Last year's self-guided tour drew more than 100 guests, and was "so popular, and people liked it so much, we thought we should do another one," Nelson says. …

Sharon Triathlon Seeks Volunteers' Aid

Annual event is this Sunday.

The annual Sharon Triathlon is sold out, yet needs more people. More volunteers are needed for Sunday's swim, bike and run at Lake Massapoag, says Max Performance Race Director Tim Richmond.  All volunteers can raise money for their cause, and receive a technical race shirt, he says. Interested readers should e-mail volunteers@maxperformanceonline.com. The Rotary Club of Sharon is volunteering at the Sprint Triathlon, which starts at 8 a.m. at Memorial Park Beach, Richmond says. The proceeds benefit the Sharon Recreation Department. About 550 athletes -- the event's maximum -- have registered, Richmond says. The co-ed contest starts with a half-mile swim, followed by a 12.3-mile bike ride and a 4.4-mile run. "I think people that come to …
