Town center was mobbed with trick-or-treaters Sunday, who enjoyed the
postponed festivities.
Sharon trick-or-treaters had to wait an extra week for Halloween this year, but the belated celebration was a monstrous success. About 750 to 800 people attended the Sharon Recreation Department's 33rd Annual Halloween Celebration Parade on Sunday, Recreation Director Brett MacGowan said. The event was a partnership among the Sharon recreation, fire and police departments. Selectmen had postponed both the annual parade and trick-or-treating until this Sunday, due to last weekend's snowstorm. After days of anticipation, the kids said they were excited to be in the parade and to go trick-or-treating – finally. "It was annoying that we weren't able to go before, but I'm ready to go now," said Alice Zaniewski, 11, who was dressed as a cat. …

Wildlife sanctuary reschedules two-day remainder of last weekend's Halloween event to just Saturday night.
The weather gods were unkind to Sharon's Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary. A power outage that ended Wednesday night reduced the nearly 2,000-acre wildlife sanctuary's nature center to a minimal opening until Thursday, Sanctuary Director Christine Turnbull said Thursday. The facility's heat and phones were out during this period, she said. "The trails were extremely blocked with trees, and will take weeks if not until next spring to get to all of the trail areas," Turnbull said. The MassAudubon site has rescheduled the remainder of its 29th Halloween Prowl to just Saturday night after last weekend's snowstorm canceled both the Saturday and Sunday night events, she said. Moose Hill officials have contacted those holding tickets to last weekend…

Legislator urges action on power outage rebate legislation.
A local legislator has called for utility companies to take responsibility for extended outages. State Rep. Daniel Winslow (R-Norfolk) has asked the House Rules Committee to take action on a power outage rebate bill. According to a release from Winslow's office, the bill would require rebates to customers who go without power for more than eight hours. The rebate would be for two days of their average bill for each day the customer is without power. "Right now, more than 90 percent of the residents in Wrentham are without power for an extended period of time for the second time in three months," Winslow said in a statement. "We need to make sure the residents of Massachusetts are being taken care of and the utility companies are held …

Remaining homes expected to get electricity back tonight.
NSTAR reports that 32 Sharon customers were without electricity at 7 p.m. Wednesday, but anticipates restoring power tonight. The Sharon homes have been dark since the Halloween weekend snowstorm. NSTAR has provided outage updates on its website. The utility has 6,652 Sharon customers. Downed tree limbs continued to adorn a number of Sharon streets Wednesday as the clean-up continued. Public Works Superintendent Eric Hooper said Sharon's Farnham Road compost area will be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. this week, and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. next week for residents to dispose their storm debris. The site also will be open to residents every weekend in November, he said. "Please do not drag branches to the street or sidewalk expecting the DPW to collect…

Fire chief also hopes to use Reverse 911 to better alert residents.
Sharon officials will open a shelter in a town-owned building the first day after the next storm warranting one, Fire Chief James Wright said today. The shelter would open on a small scale and "gear up as necessary to a bigger location," Wright said. The fire chief said he's thinking about the Sharon Community Center, and moving to Sharon High School if necessary. Monday, the day after the Halloween weekend snowstorm, a warming center initially was established at the Sharon Housing Authority's community center at 18 Hixson Farm Road. Before long, the shelter moved to the Sharon Public Library's Cynthia B. Fox Community Room, where there were cots, coffee and pastries. Wright said eight people used the library Monday night, but all left …

Here are the other highlights of the Sharon Police log.
Blown transformers and fallen trees were common sights in Sharon during the beginning of last weekend's snowstorm, the Sharon Police log shows. Police first reported asking the Department of Public Works to sand the streets, which were getting icy, at 6:58 p.m. last Saturday, according to the log, which runs from Sunday to Saturday. Here's how the rest of Saturday evening unfolded, for storm-related calls: Here are the other highlights of the Sharon Police log for Oct. 23 to Oct. 29, courtesy of the Sharon Police Department: On Sunday, Oct. 23 at 11:06 a.m., someone reported a wild cat in the Grove Street area. At 12:43 p.m., police assisted someone on Pond Street with an unhappy patron. At 12:56 p.m., someone reported trespassing on Bay …

'I hope we have a good turnout,' Roach says.
Sharon youngsters will go trick-or-treating this fall after all. Selectmen tonight asked the town's neighborhoods to have candy ready Sunday for costumed kids at their door. Monday, Fire Chief James Wright announced that trick-or-treating was canceled that night, Halloween, citing trees and power lines down, and icy conditions caused by the weekend's snowstorm. Now, Sharon will celebrate Halloween this Sunday instead: the Everwood Day Camp's 2nd Annual Halloween Family Festival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., followed by the Sharon Recreation Department's 33rd Annual Halloween Celebration Parade, from to 2:30 to 4 p.m.; and then trick-or-treating. "I hope that we have a good turnout" for trick-or-treating, Selectman Walter "Joe" Roach Jr. said. …

Puritz says the utility's resources were 'over-taxed.'
Sharon officials' NSTAR contacts have been "extremely supportive" regarding the Halloween weekend snowstorm, Town Administrator Benjamin Puritz told selectmen tonight. NSTAR employees were "asking the town for its priorities," which included the Sharon Fire Station and the Sharon Town Offices, among other buildings, Puritz said. "They were as accommodating as they were able to be under the circumstances," he said. Puritz said NSTAR told him that 776 Sharon residences, or about 12 percent of the town, were still dark as of 5 p.m. Tuesday. He expected that fewer homes remained without electricity later that night, when the selectmen's public meeting was wrapping up. On its website, NSTAR reported that 493, or 7.4 percent, of its 6,652 Sharon…

Thanks for caring about the kids Joe! I wasn't sure if we were going to have Halloween at all. Although my son has been trick-or-treating in Canton (on Monday) it's nice to know we can go out in our own neighborhood! Thanks to Joe Roach a great selectman and even better guy!   more ›
