Former Westborough High Gymnast and Coach Now Flying With Sharon Eagles

Bill Martin, who graduated here in 1984, is Sharon High School's newest athletic director.

This summer, a Westborough High School 1984 grad and former gymnast Bill Martin became the Sharon High School athletic department's all-around guy. Martin is Sharon's newest athletic director, his first such post. Martin comes to Sharon from Shepherd Hill Regional High School in Dudley, where he taught for 11 years. He also was the physical education, health and family and consumer science department coordinator for the past three years. He served as assistant athletic director for five years before that. At Westborough, Martin was an all-around gymnast his first three years, and played soccer for all four years. In Sharon, he's involved with all of the Eagles' sports: juggling their behind-the-scenes needs, such as scheduling and …

Sharon High Gymnasts Well-Positioned for Sectionals

The Eagles are seeded fourth among 12 teams at this Saturday's meet.

The Sharon High School gymnastics team spent this week focused on routine, aiming for an honor that's far from routine. The Eagles enter Saturday's South Sectionals seeded fourth among 12 teams, co-coach Jess Savrann says. The top four teams Saturday advance to the States, on March 3 at Shrewsbury High School. The Sectionals are at 4 p.m. at Hudson High School. Senior tri-captain Cori Plesko says the Eagles have spent the week "making sure the routines that we have are clean and the best we can do." "We're perfecting every little bit of those routines that we've been doing all year," says Plesko. Seniors Melissa Steinberg and Sara Spelfogel also are tri-captains. Sharon Gymnast Kaplan Repeats as Hockomock All-Around Champion

The Eagles next compete in the Sectionals, on Feb. 25.

The Sharon High School gymnastics team was honored as the Hockomock League's defending Davenport Division champions Saturday night, and then recorded more top performances. The Eagles saw junior Samantha Kaplan repeat as league champion in the all-around with a score of 37.9, co-coach Jamie Whiting said. Kaplan won all four events: vault (9.5), bars (9.5), beam (9.5) and floor (9.4). Sharon also got first-place finishes from junior Alicia Dagle (beam) and senior tri-captain Melissa Steinberg (floor). Senior Brian Le finished second in the vault. Sophomore Chelsea Noller finished tied for second in floor. Dagle and sophomore Marielle Fisher placed fourth in bars and beam, respectively. SHS Gymnasts Head to Saturday's Hocks Perfect -- Again

The Sharon High School gymnastics team heads into Saturday's Hockomock League Championship meet after finishing its regular season perfect -- for the second straight year. The Eagles are 7-0 after defeating visiting Attleboro, 141.35 to 129.25, at the Academy of Gymnastics in Stoughton on Tuesday night. Sharon is undefeated for the second straight season, Athletic Director Robert Sondheim said today. The Eagles were 8-0 in 2011. Video: Sharon High Gymnasts Set School Point Record, Season Bests

The Sharon High School gymnastics team set a team point record and individual season bests to beat host Mansfield, 145.325 to 144.7, at Arnold's Gymnastics Academy in Mansfield on Saturday. The Eagles also remained perfect this season: 5-0, entering their final two regular-season meets, at North Attleboro this Friday at 7:30 p.m.; and against Attleboro at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7 at the Academy of Gymnastics in Stoughton. Sharon's 145.325 points against Mansfield was a school record, Co-Coach Jamie Whiting said. Eagles Gymnasts Fly to Season High

The Sharon High School gymnastics team scored a season-high 138.95 points to beat a combined Medfield-Ashland-Dover-Sherborn team, 138.95 to 138.85, at the Academy of Gymnastics in Stoughton on Friday night. Juniors Jessica Chabot and Alicia Dagle had season highs on the balance beam, with 9.3 and 9.1 respectively, Co-Coach Jamie Whiting said. Chabot also had a season high all around (35.45), Whiting said. Sharon (4-0) travels to Mansfield at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Sharon High Gymnasts Up To 2-0

The Sharon High School gymnastics team improved to 2-0 after defeating King Philip, 136.65 to 118.45 at Arnold's Gymnastics Academy in Mansfield on Tuesday. Junior Samantha Kaplan led the Eagles with a 37.2 in the all-around, co-coach Jamie Whiting said Wednesday. Sharon is off until next Friday, Jan. 6, when the Eagles host Canton at 7 p.m. at the Academy of Gymnastics in Stoughton.

SHS Gymnasts Win Opener

The Sharon High School gymnastics team won its 2011-2012 season opener Monday night, defeating host Oliver Ames, 133.35 to 116.3, co-coach Jamie Whiting said Tuesday. Senior Brian Lee won the vault with a score of 8.95, Whiting said. Juniors Sami Kaplan and Jessica Chabot were second and third, with scores of 8.9 and 8.8, respectively. Kaplan also won the beam with a score of 9.1, Whiting said. Sharon next faces King Philip, at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Arnold’s Gymnastics Academy in Mansfield.

Veteran leadership will guide the Sharon High School gymnastics team this winter Senior tri-captains Cori Plesko, Sara Spelfogel and Melissa Steinberg are among the returnees from last year's Hockomock League championship team, which finished the regular season 8-0. First-year co-coaches Jess Savrann and Jamie Whiting also are returnees of sorts. Both were Eagles captains -- and teammates -- during their Sharon High careers. Whiting graduated in 2005 and Savrann in 2007. They take over as coaches from Jessica Hiltz, who stepped down after one season to accept a job elsewhere.
