Boston Marathon Bombing Remembed by Project 351 With Patriot Place Rally

The youth leadership group marked the anniversary as part of a day of activities in Foxborough.

During a special reunion over the weekend, members of the Project 351 marked the two month anniversary of the Boston Marathon Bombing with a special rally outside of Gillette Stadium. After a brief rally near the west entrance to the stadium, the group walked 2.6 miles around and inside the stadium in memory of those affected by the bombing. During the day, the group also heard from special guests Rob Ninkovich and Honorary Chair Governor Deval Patrick. After the walk, members of Project 351 took part in a service project to help those served by the Foxborough Food Pantry and ended the day with a special reunion BBQ.  Project 351 celebrates the ethic of service, youth leadership, and the power of community to uplift and unite.  Eighth-…

Massachusetts Has History of Elected Officials Leaving Early

One observer called the trend "upward political mobility" for officials in the Bay State, but that's perhaps not the case with outgoing Lt. Gov. Tim Murray.

As Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Tim Murray conducts his final full week in state government, he finds himself close to joining familiar ranks of several top elected Bay State officials in the not too distant past. Murray, like with recent governors William Weld and Paul Cellucci, will not finish his last elected term in office. After this coming Sunday, Murray, a Democrat, will become the new president and CEO of his hometown Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, a decision he announced last week. The decision once again raised questions about whether Gov. Deval Patrick will complete his term own term set to expire in early 2015. Weld, a Republican, left the corner office in the mid-1990s after he was tabbed by President Bill Clinton to be …

Governor Patrick Discusses Taxes, Job Growth to Neponset Valley Chamber of Commerce

Governor Deval Patrick addressed the Neponset Valley Chamber of Commerce to discuss how he plans to improve the Commonwealths economic development.

Gov. Deval Patrick spoke to the Neponset Valley Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday to discuss economic opportunities and job growth. And with the sequester on the minds of many business owners, Governor Patrick believed that it was still too early to tell what can happen in Massachusetts. "The question is if it that does happen, will it happen right away? Or at the next fiscal year? We don't know," he said. But he was confident that the investments that are currently being made in education and infrastructure will not only help the economy, but will also help future generations. "I thought to myself, 'Our grandparents gave us that.' Like Rte. 3 and I-95 or the street I came down to get here this morning; like the T and Logan Airport and UMass…

(From the office of Senator Brian A. Joyce.) Senator Brian A. Joyce has officially been sworn in to represent the Norfolk, Bristol and Plymouth District for the 188th Session of the General Court. Joyce was sworn into office by Governor Deval Patrick during a ceremony at the State House in Boston.            “It is a great privilege to work in the Massachusetts Senate for the 170,000 people in my district. It’s a job where every day I have an opportunity to help people, and to make a discernible difference in the lives of lots of Massachusetts families,” said Joyce. “I recognize how fortunate I am to serve, and work very hard and get results for the taxpayers for whom I work. Massachusetts Gov. Patrick: 'I Will Sign This Bill'

Killing of Woburn Police Officer Jack Maguire helped gain support for Melissa's Bill, which limits parole eligibility for convicted violent repeat offenders.

With the fate of Melissa's Bill solely in Gov. Deval Patrick's hands Tuesday, the governor made a decision at 2:30 p.m. "I will sign this bill," he said. Melissa's Bill, named for Melissa Gosule who was killed by a violent repeat offender who was out on parole, has been in the works for years. But it was the killing of Woburn Police Officer Jack Maguire on Dec. 26, 2010 that spurred more support for the bill. Officer Maguire responded to an armed robbery at Kohl's in the middle of a blizzard. When he stopped the suspect, a paroled repeat offender with several convictions for robbery and violence against police officers, gunfire was exchanged. Officer Maguire was killed, as was the suspect. Chuck Maguire, Officer Maguire's brother, has …

Bottle Bill Dies in Conference Committee

Legislators decide to take the bottle bill amendment out of the jobs act.

The bottle bill will not make it to the governor's desk this year.  The controversial proposal was included as an amendment to the Senate jobs bill but scrapped Monday in conference committee, according to an aide to its sponsor, Sen. Robert Hedlund (R-Weymouth). The jobs bill is expected to be laid before Gov. Deval Patrick today, July 31, the last day of the legislative session. The amendment had faced strong opposition in the House, with Speaker Robert DeLeo describing it as a tax. Hedlund disputed this view, saying that taxes can't be redeemed.  The expansion to the 31-year-old law designed to promote recycling and reduce litter would have added plastic bottles used for water, juices, iced tea and sports drinks to the list of …

I don't know how the beverage industry folks who torpedoed this updated bottle bill with their lies, lobbying and outright bribes can sleep at night, knowing what they are doing to their state, country and the planet. Maybe they themselves don't realize, but their children and grandchildren certainly will bear the brunt of their avaricious, short-sighted self-interest. These folks remind one of …   more ›

Legislature Rejects Governor Patrick's 'Three-Strikes' Amendment

The governor on Saturday sent 'Melissa's Bill' back to the Legislature.

Gov. Deval Patrick set in motion a wave of criticism when he proposed an amendment to the "three strikes"/Melissa's Bill on the grounds it lacked sufficient provisions for judicial discretion.  Warning of possible unintended "unjust consequences" that can arise from mandatory sentencing laws, Patrick wrote in a letter to the Legislature, "None of us is wise or prescient enough to foresee each and every circumstance in which the new habitual offender provisions may apply." On Monday afternoon, the House rejected Patrick's amendment by a vote of 132-23, according to The Boston Globe. Later on Monday, the Senate also rejected the amendment, according to WCVB, Channel 5. The bill's fate is up in the air, as the legislature's summer session …
