How Can I Unsubscribe From Bulk Mailings?

There are several options available for people who want to start clearing out their mailbox.

One good thing about bulk mail is that unlike its distant cousin, the telemarketer, it can’t wake you up or interrupt your dinner. But that said, it does have a way of clogging up your mailbox in any given week with lots of paper and not necessarily much else of interest.  So what can you do about unwanted bulk mailings? There is indeed a “Do Not Mail” list to go along with the “Do Not Call” list. The Federal Trade Commission has a page with various links for people to use, depending on what kind of mail they wish to stop receiving. For example, OptOutPreScreen.com, an official credit industry site, will allow you to stop receiving pre-screened credit and insurance-related offers. The website also allows people to opt out for a five-year …

I got a $200 rebate from the Sharon Water Department for a High-Efficiency Toilet (HET) that uses only 1 gallon per flush. My old toilet used 3.5 gallons per flush. The Sharon Water Department also offers rebates for water-efficient washing machines, and gives away low-flow shower heads and faucet aerators. In our household, we average 25 gallons per person per day, which is a lot less than the …   more ›

10 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day All Year Long

Here are some eco-friendly ways to celebrate Earth Day any day!

Earth Day took place on Monday, April 22 this year. But even though the annual celebration of the earth is past, that doesn't mean you can't still work on your green thumb. Founded in 1970 in the U.S. as a day of education about environmental issues, Earth Day is now a globally celebrated holiday. More than one billion people in 192 countries will observe the 43rd anniversary of Earth Day, according to the Earth Day Network. Although Earth Day is a great reminder to be environmentally conscious, there are plenty of simple ways you can celebrate the earth all year long. Here are just 10 ways you can be eco-friendly long after Earth Day is over: 1. Plant a tree. Planting a tree is perhaps the most common Earth Day activity, but you can plant…

Every Day is Earth Day: Plant the Seeds, Inspire Children

Encourage children to love the earth and all will bloom naturally. Here are some family activities you can do to foster environmentalism in Sharon.

April 22 was Earth Day, which is celebrated across the entire world. What can we do to show our love of the earth on a daily basis?     Love begins in the home and so does the love for our earth. If you teach your children to respect the earth on every level, they will continue to realize the global impact of environmentalism when they become adults. This is important for the sustainability of life as we know it.   Perhaps we can set off that spark in a child, making them want to learn more about the process and do more to help. If we've done our part, they might strive to become an environmentalist—professionally or at heart. Inspire children, plant the seeds early on, and they will flourish.  We all strive to do "acts of kindness" for …

Eating Organic in Sharon

Eating organic is good for your health and it's good for the planet. But sometimes, it can be hard to find. Here's where to get the best organic foods in and around TOWN.

Did you know that eating conventional produce increases your risk of pesticide contamination by 30 percent? And chowing down on non-organic chicken and pork increases your risk of exposure to antibiotic-resistant bacteria by 33 percent?  This is all according to a 2012 Annals of Internal Medicine report.  If you're not already sold on the benefits of eating organic, consider this: organic foods may have more nutrients than their conventionally produced counterparts. Organic broccoli, for example, has higher levels of antioxidants and vitamin C than the traditionally produced variety, found a 2012 Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture study. There’s also evidence of more heart-healthy omega-3s in organic poultry and dairy.   So …

21. Consider getting solar panels with a $0 down lease or, even better, by purchasing them outright. I'm saving $100 monthly on my electric bill and receiving another $1,700 annually by selling my SRECs. Payback? 4-5 years. More info at www.MassSolarInfo.com. Go Green with Gary. :)   more ›
