Vince Wiflork, star defensive tackle for the New England Patriots, made a stop over in Sharon this week. Wilfork stopped by the South Main Street branch of Eastern Bank to film several TV spots promoting a partnership between Eastern Bank and the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve's Toys for Tots Campaign. Starting Thursday, Eastern Bank's 94 offices began serving as official toy drop-off locations. The deal with The Community Bank should be complete by Dec. 31.
Eastern Bank, which has a Sharon branch, plans merge with The Community Bank by Dec. 31. The Community Bank would become part of Eastern, Eastern officials said today in a press release. The deal requires approval from state and federal regulators, as well as the banks' corporators and holding companies, according to the press release. Boston-based Eastern has 94 branches. The local ones are at 7 South Main St., Sharon; 39 Washington St., Canton; 240 Providence Highway, Dedham; and 397 Washington St., Stoughton. Brockton-based Community has five branches, none locally. Sharon leasing a parking lot at Eastern Bank.
Seventeen Sharon commuters waiting for quarterly train parking passes will get special new ones very shortly. Eastern Bank's second rear parking lot will provide the parking spaces under a three-year lease that selectmen approved Wednesday night. The bank is located at 7 South Main St., within walking distance of the Sharon MBTA commuter rail station on Upland Road. It's the latest effort to address parking issues, including a crunch, at the train station. Sharon will pay the bank the taxes on that "very infrequently used" lot, worth about $1,100, Sharon Finance Director William Fowler said. The quarterly pass parking revenue will fund it, he said. A bank with a Post Office Square branch has collected a top lending honor. Eastern Bank announced today that it is the U.S. Small Business Administration's top lender for the third straight year. Eastern also is the SBA's top lender in New England, bank officials said on their website. Eastern's Sharon office is at 7 South Main St. "Eastern Bank made 342 SBA loans in Massachusetts totaling more than $24 million, according to the SBA’s Boston District Office," according to the press release. "In addition, Eastern ranked No. 1 in the origination of 504 SBA first mortgage loans. The rankings are issued annually in October, based on the number of loans originated by banks in the SBA fiscal year, which runs Oct. 1 to Sept. 30."

Great blues band and beautiful weather leave elbow room scarce at 17th annual Square Jam Thursday night.
Lines comparable to holiday shopping season stood outside Sharon's Post Office Square shops and restaurants Thursday evening. Sharon's 17th Annual Square Jam filled the downtown with all ages eager to try free food offered by some town eateries and learn about local groups and causes at tables set up throughout the square, which was closed to traffic. Roomful of Blues performed on a special stage erected for the event. Sponsoring the event were the Wilber School Apartments/Beacon Communities, NStar, Comcast, Eastern Bank and the Rotary Club of Sharon.
