Daily Dose: Fifth Graders Cleanup School Grounds, Selectmen to Meet Tuesday

The Sharon Board of Selectmen will meet tonight at 7 p.m. The Board will consider appointing Ryan McGrath as a Special Police Officer in town, as well as discuss the potential for wine sales at the Farmers Market. Blizzard Snapshot: Sharon Schools After the Storm

Check out recent photos of three schools in Sharon covered in snow from this weekend's blizzard.

Like several communities around the area, Sharon Public Schools cancelled classes for Monday, Feb. 11 as a result of the Blizzard of 2013 that struck over the weekend.  School officials, meanwhile, posted several photos on the SPS website to give a view of how some of the schools were after the storm.  The photos of the , Sharon Middle School and East Elementary show impressive amounts of snow in the area.

PHOTOS: The East Elementary School Sock Hop and Silent Auction

People came to dance, bid and show their heart.

  On Friday, February 1, East Elementary School held a Sock Hop and Silent Auction at the school. Teachers and faculty members of the school donated many of the prizes including a bagel breakfast in the teacher's room for 4 students with the principal Mrs. Murphy. Gift certificates to Davios, 1 week at Camp Everwood, 3 weeks at Camp Maplewood, CBS Scene in the Patriot Place Mall, Halfway Cafe, Maxie's Deli to name a few. Then there were the sports memorablia including a signed Tom Brady photo, Rob Gronkowski photo and several others which were donated by the New England Patriots. And the big raffle item was 4 Box Seats at the Boston Red Sox and watch batting practice on the field. Priceless! Here are some photos from the event.

PHOTOS: East Elementary School Fundraiser at Orange Leaf in Cobbs Corner

Get your fro-yo to raise money for school activities.

  On Monday, Nov 5, the East Elementary School had a fund raiser at the Orange Leaf located at the Village Shoppes in Cobbs Corner. Lisa Jaffe, VP of the PTO said, 'Although this is a fund raiser, our goal is to also include our community. People here tonight are students, teachers, family members as well as former alumni. The proceeds tonight will go to the PTO as well as programs for the East Elementary School." Here are some photos from the event.

East Elementary School Back to School Family Picnic 2012

Over 90 families from the East Elementary School were in attendance.

Students, parents and staff at East Elementary School held their annual 'Back to School' family picnic on Sunday, Sept. 23. East Elementary is known as the "school of hearts". The children painted hearts on all of the posts around the school and each is different and creative. The school of hearts stands for: H: Helpfulness E: Effort A: Acceptance R: Respect T: Teamwork Principal Liz Murphy posed with her student body.

Sharon Resident Reports Seeing Small Bear

However, police say they found no signs.

A Sharon resident driving home reported seeing a small bear in front of the East Elementary School on Monday night, police Lt. John Ford said. However, police searched the area and found no signs of the bear after speaking with the gentleman, Ford said Monday night. The man called police at 8:21 p.m., Ford said.

Fifth-Graders at Sharon's East Elementary Find Powering Bulbs a Breeze

Jane Sullivan's students built wind turbines.

East Elementary School fifth-graders in Jane Sullivan's class recently built vertical-axis wind turbines that generate enough electricity to power small light bulbs. Inspired by a Boston University graduate school class, Immersion in Green Energy, Sullivan designed a mini-unit on green energy, which included a wind turbine project. A Norfolk County Teachers Association grant Sullivan received in the fall partially funded the project. The mini-unit fit in with the Sharon curriculum standards for fifth grade, which include a unit on magnets and motors. As part of the project, students measured, cut and assembled raw materials using glue guns, saws and box cutters. Students then hand-coiled copper wire to design a stator and applied neodymium…

Pipes Shape Sharon's East Elementary Students' Connections

The Geodesic Dome Project visited Sharon.

East Elementary School fourth- and fifth-graders turned long white lightweight pipes into shapes last week. And began seeing connections between things, in the process. Dr. Mallory Bagwell of The Movement Company brought his Geodesic Dome Project to the East gymnasium, and told the students that "shape affects behavior." Try rearranging the seats in a classroom, and "see if your teacher or your behavior changes," Bagwell told the youngsters. Bagwell told Sharon Patch that, through his program, students "start seeing some real-life applications for what triangles are supposed to do." "These don't have to be pipes.
