Wednesday, June 12
(From the Sharon Police Department) Torrential rains could not dampen the spirits of the 76 Cottage Street Elementary School third graders on their field trip to the Sharon Police and Fire Museum last Friday. "They remained dry and wide eyed while viewing the vast collection of police and fire artifacts on display at the museum and receiving the history of them from their official tour guide, Sharon Police Lieutenant John Ford. “It was great fun to see the excitement from the students as well as the shared interest of the teachers and chaperones” said Lieutenant Ford. “The history of the Sharon Police and Fire Departments is the history of Sharon itself. I and Deputy Chief McGrath look forward to our official opening later this month.” …

There were 191 finishers in Sunday's Father Bullock Road Race.
As Sharon's Dave Conforto and Canton's Eric Greenspan lined up at the Father Bullock Ninth Annual Run, Walk and Shuffle Race Sunday, there was no need for any introductions or holding on to pre-race secrets. 'We train with other," said Conforto, 34. "I knew he had run yesterday." Greenspan ran in the Walpole Village Race Saturday, finishing in fourth place in 16:23 there, which would have worn the Father Bullock Race. In Sunday's race, Conforto sprinted away from Greenspan, finishing in a time of 16:30 to 18:20, almost a two minute faster. "I took off after the first quarter of a mile, " said Conforto. Greenspan was chased by the first female across the finish line, Bellingham's Helen Dinan, who was third overall in 18:37. It turn out …

Additional students expected this fall.
Sharon's Cottage Street School will have a new, fourth section of fifth grade this fall due to growing enrollment. The change won't require additional spending, School Superintendent Timothy Farmer told the school committee Wednesday night. The board approved a final budget of $36,947,797 for the fiscal year starting July 1. Farmer said some additional students are expected at Cottage, "unrelated to the whole issue of redistricting." "I think we knew when we created the sections that fifth grade was tight across the board, Cottage in particular," Chairman Laura Salomons said.

'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star' inscribed on the granite bench at the Cottage Street School's new Poet's Corner.
"Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" now is inscribed where the Cottage Street School and PTO hope to see Sharon's bright future inspired often. The school's new Poet's Corner was dedicated Monday outside and to the right of the front office. The space was funded by PTO brick sales reviving the group's school beautification project after several years of dormancy, said Barry Fritz, who led the latest effort. "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" is inscribed on the Poet's Corner's new granite bench. Monday, several students took turns reading verses from Jane Taylor's original, 1806 version, which Fritz found. Other students performed the song on their instruments. "The Poet's Corner can now fulfill its goal of being an inviting place for people to …

The students won the 'Battle of the Brains' against Cottage and Heights on Sunday.
If Sharon's Heights Elementary and Cottage Street schools ever forget who won Sunday's "Battle of the Brains," East Elementary students can give them a history lesson. Specifically, "Name the first five U.S. presidents." Only East's students knew the correct answer (George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe), in Final Jeopardy, to win the Jeopardy-style contest among the three elementary schools' fifth grades. The Sharon High School National Honor Society sponsored the event, held in the high school auditorium. The proceeds will be donated to the Perkins School for the Blind. A brief video about the school was shown before the game's first question. The event resembled the TV game show Jeopardy in all …
