Bulldogs Defeat Eagles Girls Hoop

The first meeting between the Sharon and Canton high school varsity girls basketball teams ended in a host Bulldogs 43-42 overtime win. Tonight, in Sharon, Canton won, 57-53. Sharon opened the game with a 14-4 run, and then lost its rhythm. Canton held the Eagles to less than 10 points in both the second and fourth quarters. "I think what happens is we don't box out, and we weren't helping," Sharon head coach Kate Horsmann said. "We got some rebounds and we came down and we didn't run good offense. We were helter-skelter on our offense. We didn't get good looks." Sharon looked poised to win early in the fourth quarter. More Eagles Swimmers Reach Sectionals, States

Sharon teams sweep Canton Wednesday night.

Freshman Liza Krause qualified for the sectional and the state meets individually and as part of a relay team as the Sharon High School girls swimming team defeated Canton, 90-80, Wednesday night. Sharon also won the boys meet, 95-69. Krause qualified for the post-season meets in the 100 fly, in 1:05.33, 3 seconds faster than her previous personal best, Sharon head coach Jennifer Iverson said today. The 400 free relay team of senior Tana Bao, Krause, sophomore Alex Arnoff and junior Christine LaHive also qualified for both post-season meets, winning their event Wednesday night at Randolph in 4:09.57. Eagles' Meri Kushner Reaches State Meet In 55M Hurdles

Canton defeats Sharon, 54-41.

Sharon High School senior co-captain Meri Kushner won the high jump and qualified for the state meet in the 55 meter hurdles, but Canton defeated the Eagles' varsity girls winter track team, 54-41, on Thursday at Boston University. Kushner won the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 8 inches, according to www.coolrunning.com. Sophomore Rita Kushner, her sister, was second (4 feet, 4 inches) and Canton junior Mellyn Costello was third (4 feet, 2 inches). Meri Kushner placed second in the 55 meter hurdles, with a time of 9.6 seconds. That time qualified her for the state meet, said Alan Conway, one of Sharon's coaches. Canton's Costello won the event (9.54) and Sharon freshman Hannah Morrissey was third (11.63), according to coolrunning. …

Sharon's Bennett, Langley Qualify For State Meet

Varsity boys winter track defeats Canton.

Seniors Xander Bennett and Aaron Langley qualified for the state meet as the Sharon High School varsity boys winter track team defeated Canton, 59-36, at Boston University on Thursday. The 4 by 400 relay team of junior Jared Fogel, seniors Ben Ryter and Dan Scribner and sophomore James Gildersleeve also qualified for the states, said Alan Conway, one of Sharon's coaches. Senior Connor Hichens qualified in the long jump, an event he qualified in earlier this season, Conway said. Bennett, a senior tri-captain, won the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.48 seconds, according to www.coolrunning.com. Eagles Wrestlers Have Happy New Year's Eve

Sharon defeats visiting Canton for the first time in at least four years.

The Sharon High School varsity wrestling team today with an achievement last seen in years. The Eagles beat visiting Canton, 45-30. "We haven't beaten them in four or five years," Sharon head coach Anthony Lucie said. "It was nice to get the win against them." Both teams' line-ups were short-handed due to the winter school vacation, Lucie noted. However, Sharon capitalized on one Canton move: to forfeit at 106, and move their 106 wrestler to 113 against Eagles sophomore Joe Haviland, who sought his second win of the season, he said. "They were hoping that their kid would win by a pin, which would wash that forfeit away," Lucie said. "When Haviland pinned their kid, now they're down by 12 instead of being a wash. Second Half Defense Helps Eagles Boys Hoop

The Sharon High School varsity boys basketball team overcame early defensive issues to beat visiting Canton, 48-36, in the teams' 2011-2012 season opener Friday night. Canton led, 22-21, at halftime. "I'm happy with the second half, because we picked up the defensive intensity," Sharon head coach Bruce Jackman said. "I thought we made a lot of mental errors. I was kind of surprised, because we played four pretty good scrimmages." Sharon got 13 points and eight rebounds from sophomore guard Brian Mukasa. Senior tri-captain and center Sam D'Arcy added 10 points and 12 rebounds. Junior forward Ian Beach added six rebounds and six steals. "Sam played a fantastic game," Jackman said. Sharon Girls Basketball Loses Opener In OT

The Sharon High School varsity girls basketball team's 2011-2012 season opener ended in an overtime loss, despite the Eagles trailing by 11 points after three quarters. Host Canton outscored Sharon 2-1 during the 4-minute overtime for a 43-42 victory Friday night. Bulldogs senior forward Olivia Murphy's basket with 1:10 left in overtime proved to be the game-winner. However, Sharon (0-1) missed three free throws during that frame, Eagles head coach Kate Horsmann said. "If we make any one of those free throws, we win the game," said Horsmann, whose team went 5-for-10 from the line, but just 1-for-4 in overtime. "In the overtime, we didn't do anything different. Completing Assignments Earns Sharon Football Third W

Eagles celebrate Homecoming with first Hockomock League victory in years.

The Sharon High School varsity football team used "assignment football" here Saturday to record its first Hockomock League victory in years. Senior quarterback and captain Caleb Piltch-Loeb ran for two 2-yard touchdowns as the Eagles defeated visiting Canton, 28-13, on Sharon High's Homecoming day. Junior QB Nathan Pedersen threw a 23-yard TD pass to classmate Brad Kaufman, while classmate Sean Asnes ran for a 10-yard score for Sharon's final touchdown. "We played assignment football. Our defensive line, linebackers, safeties, everybody defensively made it happen," Sharon head coach Dave Morse said. "It was just assignment football. They knew their gaps.
