Where to Find the Best Black Friday Deals in the Area

Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday rule the shopping roost after Thanksgiving.

If you have a black belt in Black Friday shopping, listen up: area big-box retailers are gearing up to dazzle bargain hunters on Black Friday!  Not to be outdone, Target and Best Buy are also planning all-out holiday shopping assaults. According to an ad leaked online, Target's best deals will be for TVs, a Nook, a Nikon camera and an XBOX 360 Kinect bundle. At Best Buy, doorbusters include deals on TVs, phones and Samsung laptop bundles. Walmart will offer three items at low prices—an iPad, a TV and a Blu-ray player.  According to TheBlackFriday.com, several other stores will also have doorbuster sales at midnight on Friday, including Kohl's.  For the early morning traditionalists, some stores will open at 4 a.m. with special sales. If …

TELL US: Should Mass. Blue Laws Be Eliminated?

Blue laws prohibit retailers from opening before midnight on Black Friday.

Black Friday is starting earlier than ever, as some national retailers have announced they will open the night of Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 22. However, here in Massachusetts, state blue laws prohibit stores from opening until midnight, according to a report by the Boston Globe.  Current blue laws prohibit retailers in the state from opening on Thanksgiving, thus preventing them from getting an early start on Black Friday sales, according to the Globe article. Some exceptions are restaurants, health care facilities and gas stations.  The laws, instituted in the 17th century, are intended to make sure holidays are properly observed, according to the Boston Globe.  Are Massachusetts' blue laws outdated? Village Toy Shop to Keep Black Friday Start Time

Unlike other establishments in the area, the local shop will not move its sale from its 7 a.m. start time the day after Thanksgiving.

While some businesses have attempted to push back their Black Friday openings this upcoming holiday, one local shop in Canton is chosing not to. The Village Toy Shop, located in Cobb Corner in Canton, will keep its 7 a.m. opening on Friday, Nov. 23. "When we started our Black Friday sale about 10 years ago, we thought we were catching early shoppers," Kathy Mabry of the Village Toy Shop said in an email to Patch. "Now it seems we will be catching shoppers as they come home from an all-night shopping spree."

Walmart Pushes Back Black Friday Opening in Mass

The retail giant has already released its Black Friday sale circular online.

Shoppers in Massachusetts and Rhode Island will have to wait until after Thanksgiving to take advantage of Black Friday sales at retail giant Walmart.  While Walmart locations across the rest of the country will open at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving, Massachusetts and Rhode Island’s Blue Laws prohibit the store to open that early in those two states. Instead, Walmart will open at 1 a.m., which is also the time many other retailers, including Target, plan to open for business on Black Friday.  Shoppers don’t have to wait until Thanksgiving to find out about the Black Friday sales at Walmart. The company already has released its circular for the sale.
