Updated: One Person Transported to Hospital After Accident on South Main Street in Sharon Saturday

The jaws of life were used to free one person involved

Sharon emergency officials had to use the jaws of life Saturday morning to free a motorist who stuck a tree on South Main Street. Sharon Fire Captain Bert Cummings said one person was involved in the accident and was transported by ambulance to Norwood Hospital. Cummings said the condition of the victim is unavailable at this time. Sharon Police Sgt. Stephen Coffey said the vehicle struck a tree while heading northbound near Ames Street at approximately 11:18 a.m. The male passenger was driving a pick-up truck and the cab of the truck buckled against the tree, Coffey said. As a result the jaws of life needed to be used. Coffey said the accident is under investigation by the Sharon Police Department.

UPDATED: Norfolk County Sheriff Deputy Dies in I-95 Crash

The accident involved a sheriff's office motorcycle, and two cars, State Police say.

A Norfolk County Sheriff's deputy has died after an accident involving a department motorcycle and two cars on Interstate 95 this morning, State Police say. The Sun Chronicle is reporting that the deputy involved was Ryan Tvelia, 42, of Plainville. An ambulance took the deputy to a local hospital after the 7:40 a.m. crash on I-95 North, north of Exit 9 in Sharon, State Police said in a press release. "(The) preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of the motorcycle was involved in a collision with one car and then was struck in a secondary collision with a second car," State Police said. Lightning struck twice in Sharon on Saturday morning. The morning thunderstorm generated a report at 9:27 a.m. of a lightning strike at Walpole Street and Old Post Road, according to the Sharon Police log. And at 10:50 a.m., someone reported lightning struck a tree on Essex Road. Meanwhile, police arrested six people -- four for operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs -- over the past two weeks.
