Two Republican Candidates for Congress to Visit Sharon

Sharon Republican Town Committee hosting Elizabeth Childs and David Steinhof next Thursday.

Sharon returns to the Fourth Congressional District spotlight next week, when two Republican candidates visit the town. The Sharon Republican Town Committee hosts Dr. Elizabeth Childs and Dr. David Steinhof from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Sharon VFW Hall. Admission is free. Childs, of Brookline, and Steinhof, of Fall River, are among those vying for the Congressional seat and seeking to succeed Barney Frank, who is not seeking re-election in November. Democrat Joseph Kennedy III attended a Sharon house party in March.

Sharon's Hichens Wins Hock Long Jump, Triple Jump Titles

The Eagles spring track teams had several top-10 performances Thursday.

Sharon High School senior Connor Hichens won the Hockomock League boys spring track long jump and triple jump titles Thursday. Hichens won the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 3.75 inches at the meet, held at Oliver Ames in Easton, according to www.athletic.net. Attleboro junior Jared Harris was second (20 feet, 9.50 inches) and King Philip junior Matt Bowers was third (20 feet, 4.75 inches). Hichens won the triple jump with a leap of 42 feet, 10 inches. Oliver Ames senior Denzel Bennet was second (41 feet, 10.5 inches) and King Philip senior Conner Smith was third (41 feet, 6.25 inches). Crescent Ridge Dairy Bar has Sharon Patch readers' favorite frozen treats. The Sharon landmark won Patch's Best Of Patch Readers' Choice poll. Crescent Ridge received 10 points for receiving 13 of the 17 votes in the contest, which began at 5 a.m. Monday and wrapped up at 9 a.m. today. Baskin Robbins in Foxborough received eight points for finishing second, with two votes. Daddy's Dairy in Stoughton, and Dairy Queen in Foxborough, received six points for finishing third, with one vote each. Because this poll is not scientific, it is not the sole consideration in choosing a winner. Eagles Baseball Clinches State Tourney

Sharon hosts Seekonk at noon Saturday.

The Sharon High School varsity baseball team clinched a state tournament spot Thursday, although the Eagles lost on the scoreboard. Host Stoughton won, 5-2. The loss made Sharon 7-9 overall, 6-8 in the Hockomock League. However, the Eagles clinched at least a share of second place in the Hockomock's Davenport Division, making them postseason bound. The first and second place teams from both Hockomock divisions advance to the state tournament. Last season, Sharon finished 15-5, earning the fourth seed in the MIAA Baseball South Division 2 bracket and receiving a first-round bye. Plymouth North won the semifinal, 4-1. Sharon High Sports Round-Up: Boys Tennis Wins 33rd Straight Hock Title

The girls team also wins on Thursday. Both teams are headed to the state tournament this spring.

The Sharon High School boys tennis team won its 33rd straight Hockomock League title Thursday by defeating visiting Oliver Ames, 5-0. Sharon (13-0) got singles wins from senior co-captain Vivek Nangia (first, 6-0, 6-0), freshman Peter Hu (second, 6-0, 6-1) and senior Aditya Puttigampala (third, 6-2, 6-2). The Eagles' doubles wins came from the teams of senior co-captain Eric Bloom and junior Jake Steinberg (first, 6-0, 6-0) and senior Ben Gilman and junior Josh Dobbin (second, 6-0, 6-0). Sharon hosts Stoughton at 3:45 p.m. Friday, at Deborah Sampson Park.   Meanwhile, the Sharon High School girls tennis team swept host Fontbonne Academy, 5-0.
