Scott Berenson donated stem cells to a woman in Connecticut suffering from acute myeloid leukemia. On Tuesday, the two will meet for the first time at a special gala in New York City.
Six years ago, Sharon-native Scott Berenson, 37, was helping his wife Alison by volunteering for one of the many projects she took on in her role as the the young adult program director for Combined Jewish Philanthropies. This time it was a registration drive at Harvard Hillel in Cambridge for the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation. Berenson was there, so he figured he would take the 90 seconds it took for a clinician to swab the inside of his mouth and send it off for testing. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) is rolling out an entirely new alerts system next month which includes changes from the details provided in alert messages to a visual website enhancement. Through the new system, which goes into effect June 4, users can opt to receive email or text alerts for a late bus or train or a service interruption, much like the old system. However, the new alerts “will be clearer and more detailed with additional information regarding specific trip times, service schedule changes, and distinct directional, branch, and station communications,” according to an MBTA press statement this week.
