Stoughton High Boys' Basketball Team Downs Sharon

The Stoughton High boys' basketball team picked up its first win of the season Tuesday at Sharon, improving to 1-1 on the young season.

Revenge.

Although the Eagles fly into the basketball season on a high after the football team won the Division 3 Super Bowl, the Knights (many of whom are also football players) felt the pain of one of the best seasons in school history slip through their hands.

Unfortunately for Sharon that was the gridiron, and this was the basketball court, and the Knights were determined to come out of Sharon this time, with a win.

Tuesday night in Eagle country, the Stoughton High basketball team came away with a 63-54 win, improving to 1-1 on the young season, while Sharon falls to 0-2.

Sharon had strong performances from junior tandem Brian Mukasa and James Fritzson who contributed 13, and 9 points respectively. Fritzson, who was a game time decision, proved key in keeping Sharon in the game, despite being down as many as 12 in the second half.

For the second straight game Stoughton had strong games across the board.

Mike Gallagher finished with 5 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds. Senior captain Mauro Oliveira chipped in with 14 points. Marcus Middleton was the high scorer for Stoughton with 23 points and 2 steals.

And Junior Joey Wilder, a varsity player since freshman year, arguably had his best game in a Stoughton uniform, recording a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

The team as a whole grabbed 33 boards Tuesday night. The Knights shot 6 for 15 from three point land, and 17 for 25 on foul shots.

Head coach John Gallivan talked about the win.

"Every win is big. Sharon is a great team, and we were thrilled to come out of the game with a win," he said.

Gallivan was impressed with his team's resiliency when Sharon was able to make a couple of runs late in the game to make it a close contest.

"We can let them make their run, but we need to make sure we answer as a team. They cut it to one a couple of times but we were able to survive it, and make a couple of shots and stops."

Gallivan gave credit to the whole team for Stoughton's first win of the season.

"Total team win tonight. A lot of different guys stepped it up tonight, some guys had a career game, we had contributions from everyone who played," he said.

"Joey Wilder had a double-double, we had Stanley [Sajous] scoring inside and outside. Marcus had a slow start because of all the attention they were paying him, but he still ended up with 23 points, being 8 for 9 from the free throw line. Gallagher had 7 assists - we don't win this game without Gallagher - and Mauro had a big 14 off the bench, and Joe Bunce-Grenon comes in and hits 4 three pointers."
