Sharon's Top Five Sports Moments of 2013

Editor’s note: This list is limited to Sharon High School sports moments that took place during the 2013 calendar year.

With Eagle Pride taking over Sharon High School, the athletics teams saw plenty of success in 2013. Teams took home league titles, had strong performances on the state level, and surprised some with tournament runs.

Here is a look back at Sharon High School’s top five sports moments of 2013.

5. Another League Title for Boys’ Tennis

The year may have been different but the story was the same for the boys’ tennis team. With a league record of 16-0 and an overall record of 20-2, the team took home their 34th straight league title in convincing fashion.

The team would go on to make it to the MIAA Division 2 South semi-finals where they were defeated by Duxbury.


4. Golfers Thrives at Hocks and States

It was close but in the end, it was the Eagles who walked away with the hardware at the Hockomock Golf Championship in October. 

Beating Canton by two strokes, the Sharon Eagles were crowned the best golf team in the league, taking first place with a score of 243 at the tournament held at the Granite Links Golf Club in Quincy.

Colton Bader led the team, scoring an 80 and finishing in a three-way tie for second place. Angela Zhang was not far behind in fifth place with an 81. Max Crooks placed eight, shooting an 82.

Earlier in the year,  hang competed at the girls’ individual golf state championship tournament where she took third third place with a score of 80.

3. Gymnastics Shines at States

In Gymnastics, a strong performance by Boston Globe All-Scholastic Samantha Kaplan led the Eagles to a second place finish at the state meet.

The team also took second place in the south sectional meet behind state champion Barnstable.

2. Baseball Makes it to the Semi-Finals

After a 12-8 regular season in baseball, the Eagles got hot at the right moment, making it to the Division 2 South semi-finals. Although the end result was a 12-6 loss to Stoughton, few could deny the fact that the team had a great season.

1. Sharon Boys’ Basketball’s Run to the South Semi-Finals

In a league known for quality basketball, the Eagles managed to surprise many with their uptempo play and second place finish in the Davenport Division behind Division 1 Central champions Milford.

The highlight of the season may have been the MIAA Division 2 South quarterfinals when the Eagles hosted Quincy in their first home tournament game in years. The 78-61 win sent Sharon to the semi-finals where they lost a tightly contested game to eventual sectional champion Scituate.

With a 4-0 start and goals of a state title, the 2014 tournament may bring Sharon an even better postseason run.
