Future Uncertain For Former Sharon Public Schools Administrative Offices

It’s been over two years since the Sharon Public School’s administrative staff left their office on One School Street for the renovated Sharon Middle School. Since then, the building has housed the Police and Fire Museum and  seen some use for meetings.

Plans to use the building for professional development and as a meeting space proved to be more difficult than expected with few groups consistently using the space.

“It ended up being a little bit more inconvenient to go to One School Street just to have a meeting,” Sharon superintendent Timothy Farmer said at the Nov. 6 meeting of the Sharon School Committee.

Even Farmer’s attempts to use the building proved to be more trouble than it was worth.

“I tried my best as well but if I have a meeting here (Sharon Middle School), my office is right here if I forget something and not across town,” he said.

With little use, Farmer recommended the school committee to engage in conversation to consider turning the building over to the town and allowing them to choose what to do with it.

Vice-chair Veronica Wiseman pitched using the building for storage or for administrative staff if the middle school needs more classroom space but neither idea seemed feasible after a brief discussion.

“It almost ends up being an inconvenience because every time you store something there, you’re setting the alarms off. You have to pay the custodians to deal with that. You don’t want everyone to have a key so only certain people have keys to access,” Farmer said.

Currently, the school committee is in charge of the use of the building. The committee will vote on whether to turn over the building to the town and give them control over the building’s fate at their Oct. 20 meeting.
