Sharon High's Quiz Show Run Ends

Hamilton-Wenham wins quarterfinal, advances to Eastern Mass. title game.

Sharon High School's run during WGBH's High School Quiz Show ended Sunday night.

Hamilton-Wenham won the quarterfinal game, 295-210.

Hamilton-Wenham faces Arlington in the Eastern Mass. Championship game, which airs at 7 p.m. next Sunday, May 22 on WGBH-2. The winner advances to the June 5 state championship. Arlington had defeated Mystic Valley in the May 8 quarterfinal.

Sharon's team includes senior Nishanth Iyengar, sophomores Matt Corman and Frank Zhou and freshman Siddharth Singh. Sophomores Hari Anbarasu and Pittayut Phonboon are the alternates.

Sunday night, Hamilton-Wenham led after each of the game's four rounds: toss-up, where each correct answer earns 10 points, but teams aren't penalized for incorrect answers; head-to-head, pitting one player from each team against each other for 90 seconds, with each correct and incorrect answer worth 10 points; categories, featuring six categories of five questions of increasing value; and the 90-second lightning round, with each correct and incorrect answer worth 20 points.

Sharon trailed, 110-90, after the first round; 170-110 after the second round; and 255-210 after the third round.

Sharon competed in the fast-paced academic game show's 16-team single-elimination tourney for the first time.

The 16 teams qualified for the tournament in October, out of 90 schools from Eastern and Central Mass.
