Foxborough Charter School Looks Forward To January

New classroom building opens then. Classes start Tuesday in modulars.

Foxborough Regional Charter School students start the school year Tuesday, but will end the school year in a slightly different place.

All kids will move into the 27-classroom middle and high school addition in January, Executive Director Mark Logan says.

The new classrooms will replace the K-12 school's 26 modular classrooms. The charter school has had modular classrooms since 2004, adding more since then.

The construction will delay the charter school's traditional summer open house until after school starts, and possibly to two different nights, Logan says.

"Because of all the construction, there's limited parking," he says.

"We need to get the school ready for opening day rather than having an open house."

Revising the school's curriculum to align with the state's new Common Core standards is among the staff's tasks this year, Logan says.

School districts must complete this alignment by the start of the next school year, according to the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

The charter school also sees a significant increase in the number of students for whom English is a new language, Logan says.

Helping those students acclimate to their new school is important, he says.

"It's not just about the language itself and about helping them be successful academically. It's about social acceptance. It's about understanding their beliefs and what's important to them," Logan says.

"We thrive on our diversity."

The school serves about 1,200 students from 20 area communities: Attleboro, Avon, Brockton, Canton, Easton, Foxboro, Mansfield, Medfield, Medway, Millis, Norfolk, North Attleboro, Norton, Norwood, Plainville, Sharon, Stoughton, Walpole, West Bridgewater and Wrentham.

The waiting list has just under 2,000 students, from 42 communities, Logan says.
