Visions for Vacancies: Filene's Basement

What should replace the SYMS/Filene's Basement on Route 1 and Access Rd.?

Drive around Norwood and you'll notice far too many empty storefronts and buildings.

This week, we're beginning a new series titled "Visions for Vacancies." We'll showcase an empty storefront and ask you what should take up the space.

This week, we ask you what should go in at the empty storefront on Route 1 and Access Rd. that was formerly SYMS/Filene's Basement?

Located at 560 Boston-Providence Turnpike near the airport and across the highway from the Land Rover dealership, Filene's Basement closed the start of this year after filing for banktruptcy in November 2011. Now the space is available for lease.

What do you think should go in the location? Another bargain spot? A grocery store or specialty market? A department store? Tell us in comments!

How about an indoor soccer field, indoor pool, or an indoor sports plex that has b-ball, hockey, soccer all in one facility. We can have good ole uncle Ernie buy it and we'll name it after him. Yaaaa....that's it!!

Wegmans or Target, and I'm sorry, but I agree with David. Although his choice of words may be construed as harsh, I agree with what he's saying. What do I know, though? I'm just another "carpetbagger."

The space probably isn't big enough for a Wegmans...not sure about a Target either...but great ideas. An indoor pool or sports complex sounds good too. How about an Aldi's or Trader Joe's? Something that will bring tax revenue into the town. Unlike the skating rink, which I heard may cost the town $400K a year. If true, that could be a big strain on the town which is already struggling to keep class sizes small and fund certain school programs like arts, music, etc. Unfortunately it seems that some in the town - both residents and selectmen/town meeting members - may not have thought this through entirely.

Love it. Defiantly a Target!!

A Target would be nice. The ice skating rink could go there too!!! We don't need it in South Norwood, unless it comes with a stop light at Washington St and Mylod St.
