Students to Receive Awards at State House Ceremony May 29

Winners of 9th Annual College Savings Art Competition to Receive U.Fund college savings accounts on national 529 Day, Highlighting Importance of College Savings

BOSTON – The Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority (MEFA) will honor the student winners of the 9th Annual College Savings Art Competition at 2 p.m., on May 29, 2013, Nurses Hall, State House.

The ceremony will be attended by the nine student winners, in grades K-5, accompanied by their parents.  Also in attendance will be local legislators and representatives of MEFA, which helps Massachusetts families plan, save and pay for college.

The nine student winners, who submitted artwork depicting the theme “What do I want to be when I graduate from college?” will share a total of $24,000 in prize money distributed to each in a U.Fund College Investing Plan account, the Massachusett’s 529 college savings plan offered by MEFA and managed by Fidelity Investments.  The name 529 refers to the section of the IRS tax code that created the college savings plan.

The first-place winners, who will receive $5,000 each in a U.Fund account, include Hannah S., a student at the Memorial School in Natick, Amanda-Lexine S., a student at the Willett Elementary School in Attleborough, and Andrew T., a student at the Estabrook Elementary School in Lexington.

The second and third place winners included:

•       Grade K-1 category: Evan N. of Sudbury (2nd place) and Collins M. of Brookline (3rd place).

•       Grade 2-3 category: Savannah E. of Sharon (2nd place) and Regina P. of Sterling (3rd place).

•       Grade 4-5 category: Justin D. of Belmont (2nd place) and Alexander K. of South Hamilton (3rd place).

Across the nation, states are recognizing May 29th as 529 Day highlighting for families the importance of saving for college in 529 college savings plans. In Massachusetts, MEFA is offering a number of events for residents statewide to discuss and get information on college savings and the Massachusetts 529 plan, the U.Fund College Investing Plan.

The U. Fund College Investing Plan is a tax-advantaged 529 college savings plan specifically designed to accumulate savings to pay for for higher education expenses.  The U.Fund, which was first introduced in 1999, has grown to more than 175,000 accounts with over $4.1 billion under management.
