Sharon Firefighters Recognized for Car Crash Response, Saving 15-Month-Old Baby

After responding to a call on Route 1, the Norfolk County Fire Chiefs Association has recognized members of the Sharon Fire Department for their outstanding work.

Giving out the awards at last week's meeting of the selectmen, fire chief James Wright praised the men for their work in what was a tough situation

“We’re out there everyday doing all kinds of different things and quite frankly every firefighter likely deserves an award but this is one of those extraordinary events that a peer within the group though it was appropriate recognizing,” Wright said.

According to Wright, on a recent Sunday with heavy traffic due to a Patriots’ game, Sharon fire responded to a car accident where the vehicle went off the road and ran into a sign pole on Route 1.

When rescue crews arrived on the scene, they found a family of three with a 15-month-old baby that was in need of CPR.

After delivering CPR on the side of the highway, the baby was able to start breathing, maintain a heartbeat, and survived the ordeal.

The two parents in the car did get medial attention for injuries obtained in the crash.

Norwood fire also supplied an engine during the rescue.

The following firefighter/Paramedics were given Lifesaving Medals:

  • James Davenport
  • Andrew Solden
  • Sean McGuire
  • Patrick McGovern

Captain Michael Madden and Firefighter/Paramedic Michael Rychlik received the EMS Meritorious Service Medal and Firefighter/Paramedic John Guiod received the EMS Administration Commendation Ribbon.
