Sharon Music Academy a Music an Experience for More Than 20 Years

A look at the Sharon Music Academy.

The Sharon Music Academy was founded in 1991 by Tanya Schwartzman and Sergey Brudniy and has since developed a method for award-winning musicianship.

Brudniy runs the administration side of the business from the couple’s home in Sharon, and he said it’s been an amazing 20 years for them.

“She started as a piano teachers, and she was so good more and more people started to come,” he said. “There was no marketing, it was just word of mouth, and now we teach many other instruments.”

Brudniy said they both emigrated from Russia. He said the building itself has been a music school since at least 1960.

“We were told music lessons have been taught here much earlier,” he said. “The house itself was built in 1899. There’s something about this spot that makes it appealing to teach music.”

Brudniy said they want to focus on teaching music, not just an instrument. He said it’s about getting a full understanding of a piece, it’s historical, cultural and musical context.

“It’s not gimmick lessons, but really teaching music,” he said. “We teach in the context of the culture. If there is a baroque music piece, there’s architecture, literature, furniture, etc., it’s a part of the history. We strive to give students this overall understanding of music in the context of the culture.”

Brudniy added their staff is from all over the world and have accolades of their own.

“We have very good teachers, five doctorates of musical arts,” he said. “They are very well known performers from all over the world, Malaysian, Chinese, Russian, Portuguese and American. We’re as multicultural as America.”

Brudniy said they do outreach with their students as well. He said recently in April the school participated in a fundraiser for the victims of the Sandy Hook shootings. He said each performer wrote a piece for what he called an unfinished song, like the lives that were tragically cut short.

“We were doing it not only for the victims, but also for the kids who survived,” he said. “It’s not only to remember the kids who died, but also for the kids and adults who have this as an experience for their whole life. In that way, I think music is not just for entertainment, it’s also an emotional outlet.”

Brudniy said they also teach composition, and their students have shined.

“One of our eight-year-olds composed a piece that won first place at the New England Piano Teacher’s Association,” he said. “When you start to get good in the instrument, it opens up your creativity and we support this.”

Brudniy said many and more adults are starting to come to take lessons. He said most of them are regular people who feel they were missing something important in their lives.

“It amazes me how strong it resonates,” he said. “They’re from all walks of life, from State Street to a bus driver. They all have families. They make a special effort to find the time not only to come here but also to practice at home to get better and better.”

The Sharon Music Academy is located on 112 N Main St.
