Hurricane Irene Returns Sharon To 'Waltons' Era

Sharon resident Judith Weader felt like she was in a classic TV show from Sunday into late Monday morning.

An Irene-related power outage starting at 11:21 a.m. Sunday had the Ames Street resident eating by candlelight Sunday night, and stocking up on ice to keep her family's food fresh.

"We're living like the Waltons," Weader said Monday.

The Weaders got their electricity back around 11:30 a.m. Monday, roughly 24 hours after losing it.

Parts of Sharon remained without power Monday afternoon. The are closed until further notice due to an outage there.

Weader spent part of Monday raking debris from her yard.

"We're trying to clean up as best as we can," she said.

"That's the only part of this we have any control over. We have no control over the power. We took on no water, which is great. But I feel the need to clean something."

A number of Sharon streets, including Moose Hill, remained closed Monday because of storm debris and downed power lines.

At Len and Nancy Sacon's Moose Hill Street home, tree remnants covered the front lawn. And a power line stretched out in front like an unwound cassette.

For a time, "you could get maybe two or three feet above a car, and then you had a tree," Len Sacon said.

"This corner of the house was damaged by a branch that fell off one of the trees. We're trying to figure out where it came from. We don't know," he said.

Sacon said his house lost electricity around 11 a.m. Sunday. It remained without power about 24 hours later.

He and his wife passed the time by "doing a lot of reading," he said.

And to keep their food fresh, "so far, we've kept the refrigerator closed, and we've collected a bunch of ice over the last couple of days," he said.
