Weekend Preview: The Friends of Borderland have 2 events this weekend.

Tour the Mansion and enjoy a night of Astronomy.

 

The Friends of Borderland, 257 Massapoag Avenue are having 2 events on Sunday, Nov 18.

There will be tours of the Ames Mansion from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Volunteer guides conduct tours which will be every 20 minutes for adults and older children. Explore the history of the Ames Mansion while supporting the Friends of Borderland. A $3. donation, per person is requested. Rain or shine.

In 2009, the Department of Conservation and Recreation did a major restoration of the interior and exterior of the mansion. In 2011 the DCRCommissioner, Edward Lambert Jr. announced that the department was committing $500,000 for the completion of the year long restoration.

Borderland's scenery and the Ames Mansion have served as backdrops for many films and television serials over the years. The 2010 film, 'Shutter Island' starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Michelle Williams was filmed at The Lodge on Lower Leach Pond.

At 6:30 p.m. you can join local astronomers beneath the stars at Borderland. There will be telescopes available to view planets and other objects in the evening sky. This event is for all ages and the Borderland Park will remain open for this event only. In the event of rain or a cloudy sky, the event will be canceled. Also this weekend on Saturday, Nov 17, the Blue Hills Reservation in our neighboring town of Canton is having a Dog Sled Fun Run from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. The Yankee Siberian Huskey Club and Boston Snow Dogs will present an educational exhibit on dog sledding in New England. There will be demonstrations with wheeled rigs, if weather permits. Meet at Houghton's Pond main parking lot, 840 Hillside Street.
