Dorothy Brenner Appel is 88 years young. Appel started painting over 50 years ago and had her first showing in Cambridge at the Cambridge Art Association.
"I started painting as a young child and always loved to go to see art demonstrations. Watching someone do a watercolor painting was fascinating to me. I would go home and do it myself," said Appel.
Appel grew up in Somerville, but has lived in Sharon for 52 years with her husband of 62 years, Bill, a retired pharmacist and now at the age of 94, a part time film actor.
She teaches five times a week in Brookline, the Sharon Adult Center, the Sharon Community Center and in her home. Contact 781-784-5133 for more information on Appel's classes.
The Sharon Open Studio Tour and Art Show that begins on Sunday, Nov 11, will feature three of Appel's art pieces. A watercolor of 'Venice', an oil painting entitled 'Saturday Night Poker' and a wood cut entitled 'Father and Child'.
The Sharon Creative Art Association and The Friends of the Sharon Public Library joined together to present the Sharon Open Studio Tour and Art Show. You will have the opportunity to speak and meet six of Sharon's most talented artists who have agreed to open their studios to the public on Nov. 11 from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Many pieces of their work will be on display and some will be for sale. The artists will tell you about their work, what inspires them, their history and their techniques.
At the same time there will be an art show at the Sharon Public Library featuring the work of many Sharon artists in a variety of media including oil, watercolor, pastel, pen and ink, photography and fabric arts. The art show is free and open to the public.
Tickets are available the day of the show and in advance for $20 at the Sharon Public Library, 11 North Main Street. All proceeds will benefit The Sharon Creative Arts Association and The Friends of the Sharon Public Library. Visit the website at:www.sharoncreativearts.org
