Master Sergeant Carin Smith Awarded the Deborah Sampson Award

The award was given on Saturday in front of the statue of Deborah Sampson at the Sharon Public Library.

Master Sergeant Carin Smith was presented with the 2012 Deborah Sampson Award with a state citation this past Veterans Day weekend. The award is presented to a woman who dressed as a man to fight in the Revolutionary War.

Smith, a Plymouth resident, served in the Massachusetts Army National Guard for more than two decades before retiring in May 2011. She was deployed to Kawai in 2005 to 2006 during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

After retiring she continued working with veterans, volunteering to care for soldiers and veterans. She volunteers at the Plymouth Career Center and Nathan Hale Veterans Foundation and Badger Basecamp.

On Saturday, actors dressed in character in front of the Deborah Sampson Statue which stands in front of the Sharon Library.
