The American Red Cross collected 43 units of blood in its annual Holiday Blood Drive at Temple Sinai of Sharon on Monday, Dec. 24.

This was the 23rd year that Temple Sinai partnered with the American Red Cross to avert a holiday blood crisis in the South Shore region, according to Dana Bottorff, a temple volunteer.

"We invite the Red Cross into our synagogue every year on Christmas Eve to help them keep the region's blood supply at adequate levels," Bottorff said. "During December, the number of blood drives normally held in businesses and colleges drops dramatically. At the same time, the need for blood rises with holiday traffic accidents. Sponsoring this blood drive is a holiday mitzvah for our temple."

In 2011, Temple Sinai's holiday blood drive collected 48 units and drew 49 donors.
