New Year Resolution: Invisible Braces Can Bring A Celebrity-Style Smile

Survey Shows Improved Smile Can Boost Self-Confidence, Image, Career

BOSTON, MASS. (Issued WINTER 2014)   -- “A new smile can improve your appearance while building your self-confidence -- maybe even help your career – and it’s a great way to kick off the New Year,” says Dr. Robert Chavez who, during 2014, is celebrating his 40th year as an Orthodontist in Greater Boston. His practice, ARCH Orthodontics, operated in partnership  with son Dr. Andrew Chase, has several convenient offices south of Boston and on Cape Cod.

According to a recent study by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), over one-third of American adults are unhappy with their smile. Of these, 36% believe they would have a better social life if they had better teeth. On a professional level, 78% of Americans perceive adults with crooked teeth to be unsuccessful. 14%  of those unhappy with their teeth felt that they might be missing out on a better job.

“Today 25% of our patients are adults,” Dr. Chavez says. “Because of advanced styles and new materials, many braces are almost invisible so they won’t be a distraction during treatment.”

In recent years, many noted actors, singers and other performers of all ages have appeared in public wearing invisible braces. Among these have been Tom Cruise, Miley Cyrus, Faith Hill and Justin Bieber.

Modern Orthodontic appliances include ceramic braces that are clear and blend in with teeth, lingual braces that attach to the back of the teeth, and removable clear plastic aligners (such as Invisalign or ClearCorrect) that are custom molded.

ARCH’s patients are usually referred by their own dentist, or patients call on their own because their teeth have shifted, or they want ‘touch-ups.’ “They want to take care of things that have been  bothering them. They’re focused on comfort, function and aesthetics,” according to Dr. Chavez.
