First Family S.T.E.M. Night a Hit!

Family S.T.E.M. Night at Sharon Public Schools

On Thursday evening, April 10, the Sharon Public Schools held the first Family S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Night for all families of students in grades K-5. Over 200 family members and children participated in 15 different engineering-focused activities. Families had fun while they worked together to solve problems and complete challenges. The evening was intended to introduce the work that scientists and engineers do every day to make our lives safer, healthier, and more convenient.  The stations included activities that featured various technical disciplines such as industrial engineering, environmental engineering, civil engineering, acoustical science, mechanical engineering and materials science. Varla Smith, Elementary School Science Coordinator, and Tina Kemp, Elementary Mathematics Coordinator, said that the interest in the Family STEM Night was so strong that additional stations were included to accommodate the large turnout. When asked about the event’s success, Mrs. Smith said,  “The enthusiasm and energy tonight was so exciting. We’ll have to do this again next year.” Both Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Kemp were grateful to several teachers and staff who facilitated the many stations and the financial support from the Sharon Education Foundation.
