Storm Center: How Much Snow Did Sharon Get?

Bundle up and get ready for the first big snowstorm of 2014.  The flakes have been falling since early Thursday morning with more snow on the way through Friday.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Norfolk County that will be effect from 4 a.m. Thursday until 10 a.m. Friday.

Due to the expected poor conditions of the roads, the Sharon Police Department is advising everyone to stay off the roads unless it is necessary.

How Much Snow Did Sharon Get?
According to the National Weather Service, Sharon unofficially received 12 inches of snow as of 12:05 a.m. Nearby Randolph received 12.5 inches as of 7:07 a.m. and Walpole got eight inches by 8:08 a.m.

Parking Ban

No on-street parking will be allowed in Sharon until Saturday morning. 


Trash Pickup Delay

From the Town of Sharon: Due to the snow emergency, there will be no trash pickup on Friday. Trash collection is already delayed one day this week because of the holiday. Residents with typical Friday collection day will have their trash picked up on Saturday, Jan. 4 as indicated on the recycling calendar.  Residents with a normal Thursday collection day will have their trash collected next Thursday, Jan. 9 and Republic will accept double the usual amount of trash due to the delay. Also, recycling that is missed this week will be collected next week.


Closings and Cancellations 

  • The Hockomock YMCA in Foxboro will remain open until 9:30 p.m. on Jan.2 and will reopen at 10 a.m. on Jan. 3.
  • Sharon Town Hall will close at 3 p.m. on Jan. 2 and will not be open on Jan. 3
  • The Sharon Public Library is closed today
  • All Sharon Recreation activities for the evening of Jan. 2 have been cancelled.

School Updates

The Sharon Public Schools will not open on Friday, Jan. 3. All school-related activities have been canceled or postponed.

How much snow is Sharon expected to get Thursday and Friday? Here are the projections as of Thursday morning.

  • National Weather Service: 8-15 inches
  • Channel 4, WBZ: 10-14 inches
  • Channel 5, WCVB: 9-15 inches
  • Channel 7, WHDH: 8-10 inches
  • Channel 25, WFXT: 10-14 inches

Winter Storm Warning

The warning is due to heavy snow expected to hit the area. According to the weather service, between 8 to 14 inches of snow could accumulate.

Hazards include heavy snow and dangerous low wind chills, considerable blowing and drifting snow with near blizzard conditions possible at times along the eastern Massachusetts coast, according to the weather service. 

Wind Chill Advisory
The National Weather Service (NWS) is issuing Wind Chill Advisories throughout the Commonwealth for the remainder of the week. Temperatures are expected to plummet and wind chills can reach -25 degrees in some areas. In order to ensure residents are prepared for these extreme temperatures, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has outlined the following safety tips.
