Profiles of the candidates on Sharon's 2012 Annual Town Election ballot.
Sharon's finances would remain Richard Powell's main focus if voters re-elect him to the board of selectmen Tuesday, he says. "I think it's important that we maintain our fiscal stability. And I think we've done that in a lot of ways," Powell says. "We've limited spending. We've reduced our borrowing. And most recently, we engaged in health insurance reform with town employees that has the potential to save up to $800,000 over the next two years. It's something that needed to be done. I think in the long term, it's certainly going to benefit the town. But I think it's also going to benefit …
Michael O'Shea says he would bring "the ability to listen to everybody and to make an informed decision" to the Sharon Board of Selectmen. O'Shea is running a write-in campaign for the three-year term on the board at Tuesday's annual town election. Incumbent Richard Powell is the lone selectman candidate on the ballot. The Sharon High School polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. A Quincy Police sergeant and Sharon native, O'Shea says that "I've been telling my wife for a long time, 'I'm eventually going to run for something.'" He adds that "I've always been interested in the board of …
Kirstin Gray says she has participated in the Friends of the Sharon Public Library the past few years. "As I got into that, I realized I'd like to learn more about the operations," says Gray, one of three candidates for library trustee on Tuesday's annual town ballot. Gray says she also attended a library long-range planning meeting, which was held last spring. "That was very interesting. That was the vision of the library for the next five years, and how does the community see the library," she says. Gray says those experiences inspired her to seek a three-year term as a library trustee this…
Robert Levin calls the Sharon Public Library "an educational institution, as well as a very important resource for the community." Levin hopes voters on Tuesday let him continue helping guide the library. Two three-year terms on the library trustees are on Tuesday's annual town ballot. Levin, Cheryl Weinstein and Kirstin Gray are the candidates. Incumbent Amie Beth Saphire won't seek re-election. The Sharon High School polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. "When you think about it, there are two educational institutions in almost every given town, and one of them is the library. The other one …
Tuesday's Sharon annual town election likely will be special for one former political science major. Kathleen Currul-Dykeman is running for Sharon School Committee. Two three-year terms are on the ballot, and she and Veronica Wiseman are the lone candidates. School committee members Glenn Allen and Mitch Blaustein are not seeking re-election. The Sharon High School polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Currul-Dykeman says that "I believe in the political process," and that holding elected office is "something that would've always interested me." "More recently, I've had the occasion to …
After six years on Heights Elementary School PTO leadership team, Veronica Wiseman likely steps into a new role Tuesday night. Wiseman and Kathleen Currul-Dykeman are the only school committee candidates on the annual town ballot. School committee members Glenn Allen and Mitch Blaustein are not seeking re-election to new three-year terms. The Sharon High School polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wiseman says the timing of a run for school committee was good; her second term as PTO chairman is ending at the same time the two school board members are retiring. "I've had the good fortune …
The Sharon Planning Board next week should get a new perspective in its efforts to increase Sharon's affordable housing options. Council on Aging Executive Board member Robert Maidman is unopposed for the five-year term on Tuesday's annual town ballot. Incumbent Susan Price is not seeking re-election. Maidman says serving on the COA board for almost nine years has afforded him "a chance to learn about the town in many ways, from many perspectives," such as diversity and generations. That experience has helped him "see how the town is evolving in ways that generate new requirements that weren'…
Professional experience brought Richard Gorden to Sharon's Board of Assessors nine years ago. Now, experience has inspired the Sharon realtor and appraiser to seek a fourth straight three-year term at Tuesday's annual town election. "I think I've been able to add a level of experience, information to the board and to the town and to the assessing department," Gorden says. The Sharon High School polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Administrative Assessor Mark Mazur and the board of selectmen recently discussed Sharon's tax rate, which is the state's highest. At that time, Mazur …
