The Sharon High School varsity football season hinges on how the Eagles carry themselves as well as the ball. First-year head coach Dave Morse sees a more winning attitude in his locker room. The improved weight room the high school built during the last academic year has contributed to that change. The Eagles have worked out there extensively, he said. "Our seniors, they believe in themselves," said Morse, an assistant coach on last year's Sharon team, which went 1-9-1. "There's now a sense of accountability. If a kid didn't show up for lifting, his teammates are upset about it. There's no '…
Sharon High School varsity field hockey head coach Peg Arguimbau calls her captains, all seniors, “a really solid leadership team.” Jen Banks is “a really good organizer”, Sheila Riley is “a really good motivator” and Ally Roos is “a really good field presence,” said Arguimbau, in her ninth season leading the Eagles. Banks, Riley and Roos are the only seniors on Sharon’s roster. “The girls respond to them well as leaders,” Arguimbau said. “That’s important. Because lots of times, if you’re not going to be paying attention to what they’re telling you, it sort of defeats the purpose. And, they …
The Sharon High School varsity volleyball team opens 2011 Thursday with a key addition to its roster. Experience. The Eagles finished 2010 at 4-14, "but we lost over half of our games by 3 points or less, and that's because most of my varsity roster last year were first-year varsity players," said David Philips, the only head coach in the team's 20-year history, the last 18 as a varsity sport. "Eight of them are back this year as seniors. So, I think they're ready to win." Senior Samantha Kendall was elected captain by her teammates last year, Philips said. "She's a great back row player," he…
The Sharon High School golf team hit a mark before Wednesday's season opener against Attleboro. "This team probably has the most talent that I've had in my 11 years," head coach Thor Van Vaerenewyck said. That talented roster also is young: two seniors, six juniors and seven sophomores. That said, "everybody played over the summer," Van Vaerenewyck said. "They really like golf. They get better every year. So, I think we're going to have a successful season," said the coach, whose Eagles went 6-8 in 2010. "Even though we're young, with a lot of sophomores and juniors, we do have some match …
Just seven of the 22 current Sharon High School varsity boys soccer players are returnees from 2010. Head coach Barry Kaye isn't rebuilding, though. "A lot of the freshmen and sophomores we had the last two years are now juniors and seniors, so we're expecting a good year this year," the sixth-year head coach said. "We feel these new players really can play." The Eagles' 2011 season opener is at 4 p.m. Thursday against Hingham, at home. "That'll be a good test for us," Kaye said. "Hingham was in the state tournament, and they always have a good team. So, we really look forward to that." …
Technically, the Sharon High School varsity girls soccer season starts Wednesday. However, after losing several games by one goal in 2010, the Eagles (4-9-5 in 2010) began preparing for 2011 in the spring. Reaching the state tournament is their goal. “We had a lot of girls who came in in-shape,” first-year head coach Jon Lavien said. “They did a lot of things in the spring and summer, which is nice to see. We’re happy the way things are going. We’re waiting for the season to go.” Sharon’s season opener is at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday at Fontbonne Academy in Milton. Senior captains Rosie Tootell and…
