New Pizzeria Delivered to Sharon Center

Mangia Trattoria and Pizzeria opened today.

There were plenty of reasons to say "cheese" during a special moment in Sharon today. Although other pizza flavors were available as well. Mangia Trattoria and Pizzeria opened today at 21 South Main St., which formerly housed Tees Plus Screen Printing and Embroidery. The Sharon restaurant is the Mangia Restaurant Group's corporate one. Sharon native and resident Steve Fenerjian owns the restaurant. Mangia's feature is its neapolitan pizza, "a very thin crust pizza" in which "we only use a whole wheat bread cooked on a stone deck," Fenerjian has said. Mangia also offers a variety of calzones and salads, according to its website. The Sharon restaurant also carries Starbucks' menu, as a vendor of that brand.

Crescent Ridge Dairy Bar Makes National Ice Cream Hot Spot List

Food & Wine magazine adds the Sharon landmark to its online slideshow of the Best Ice Cream Spots in the U.S.

The ice cream at Sharon's Crescent Ridge Dairy Bar has become part of more than the local flavor. Crescent Ridge Sales and Marketing Manager Brad Pond discovered this while reading his e-mail recently. Food & Wine magazine has added Crescent Ridge to its online-only slideshow of the Best Ice Cream Spots in the U.S. Pond says a friend's e-mail alerted him to the news. "Food & Wine Magazine is a fantastic publication," Pond says. "That is quite an honor." The slideshow notes Crescent Ridge's signature item as "Black Bear (red raspberry ice cream with chocolate chips and chocolate raspberry truffles)." "The ice cream here is made in small batches from a 40-year-old recipe," the entry states. Food & Wine Digital Features Editor Alex Vallis …

Sharon Stays Empty on Package Store Licenses

Annual town meeting proposal gets shot down Monday night.

Sharon won't license package stores. Voters at Monday night's annual town meeting defeated a proposal, 112 for to 125 against, after raising concerns about encouraging underage drinking and preserving Sharon's character. "I think it's important to keep that visual characteristic of the town," resident Alice Cheyer said in the Sharon High School auditorium. "I think having package stores here moves in the wrong direction." The board of selectmen asked voters to allow it to file a home rule petition with the Legislature for up to six all-alcohol sales licenses among Sharon Commons, Route 1, Shaw's Plaza, Sharon Heights Plaza and Post Office Square. The businesses in Post Office Square and Sharon Heights Plaza would have been required to …

Sharon's Unemployment Rate Falls to 4.2 Percent

Last March's rate was 5.3 percent.

Sharon's unemployment rate dropped by nearly a percentage point in March, according to data released last week by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development. The rate in the town fell to 4.2 percent in March from 5 percent in February. Last March's rate was 5.3 percent. In Massachusetts, the rate declined from 6.9 percent to 6.5 percent over the same time period. The unemployment rates for area towns follow:

New Sharon Pizzeria Prefers All-Alcohol License to Package Store One

Mangia Neapolitan Pizzeria would give up its beer and wine license if allowed to serve alcohol to be consumed at its restaurant.

A new Sharon Center pizzeria would relinquish its package store license if Sharon grants it an all-alcohol license, owner Steve Fenerjian said today. That possibility hinges first on a vote at Monday night's annual town meeting. One request asks voters to have selectmen file a home rule petition with the Legislature to reduce the seating requirement for restaurants and function rooms licensed to sell alcohol for consumption there, from 50 to 18. Town meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the Sharon High School auditorium. Besides the new Mangia Neapolitan Pizzeria, Charlie's Deli, French Memories Bakery and Cafe', and Pizza Market are the other restaurants affected by the vote, Town Administrator Benjamin Puritz said. Fenerjian said his other Mangia…

Some Sharon FinCom Members Question Amendment to Town Meeting Alcohol License Proposal

They wonder if Sharon Market would continue selling groceries if granted an all-alcohol license.

Some Sharon Finance Committee members Monday night questioned whether the Sharon Market would continue sell groceries if Sharon licenses it to sell all-alcoholic beverages. Sharon Market owner Jonathan Hall replied that the majority of his business is beer and wine sales. However, he is "looking at other vendors to bring in other foods that are more in line with what customers want" at his Sharon Center shop, such as cheeses and prepared foods, he said. A proposal on Monday night's annual town meeting warrant asks voters to authorize selectmen to file a home rule petition with the Legislature allowing Sharon to issue four all-alcohol sales licenses, but only to businesses at Shaw's Plaza, Sharon Commons or along Route 1. However, an …

Two Sharon Businesses Eye Amending Town Meeting All-Alcohol Proposal

The owners of Sharon Market and Bread 'N' Butter want their business districts included.

Two Sharon business owners want voters to expand into their business districts a proposal allowing all-alcohol licenses at Shaw's Plaza, Sharon Commons and along Route 1. Sharon Market owner Jonathan Hall and Bread 'N' Butter owner Maria Semyoniv are working with Sharon's town counsel to draft a proposed amendment to this May 7 annual town meeting proposal, Town Administrator Benjamin Puritz said Tuesday night. Puritz plans to ask town counsel about an additional amendment to require maintaining the grocery aspect of those businesses that receive all-alcohol licenses. As written, the town meeting proposal asks voters to authorize selectmen to file a home rule petition with the Legislature allowing Sharon to issue four all-alcohol sales …

Comcast's Sharon Service Uninterrupted by License Expiring

Town, Comcast negotiating new 10-year license.

Comcast's cable television service to Sharon has continued uninterrupted despite the telecommunications giant's Sharon license expiring on April 8, Sharon's Cable TV Oversight Committee chairman says. "No residents have been inconvenienced," committee Chairman Charles Levine told selectmen Tuesday night. "Comcast is living up to all of the provisions in their prior license." Negotiations for a new 10-year license are under way, Levine said. Vacations on both sides of the table have affected the talks, he said. No new sessions are scheduled, "but there's conversations going on," he said. Town Administrator Benjamin Puritz said there was "more convergence on the positions (Tuesday) than in the previous nine months." Levine said two major …

All-Night Programming Contest App-ealed to Sharon Resident and Friends

Tufts junior Matt Russell and three classmates teamed up to win the university's first Hackathon.

Over the weekend, Sharon resident Matt Russell and three Tufts University classmates won an all-expenses paid trip to a conference in San Francisco by pulling an all-nighter. Russell says they hadn't planned to win Tufts' first Hackathon, where students programmed for 16 hours, from 9 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday. The goal was to develop a new way to use the Evernote note taking and archiving software's application programming interface. The four friends, all Tufts junior computer science majors, met at the event and decided to form a team, Russell said. And their project won a trip to Evernote's Developer Conference in late August or early September, he said Tuesday night. "It was really cool for us, because none of us really had much …

New Sharon Bath Product Company Developed Organically

Stephanie Sousa started the S.S. Soap & Body Company after taking "a more natural approach" to eating and skin care.

A new Sharon handmade natural bath and body product company developed organically. S.S. Soap & Body Company owner Stephanie Sousa says she became interested in organic gardening, and "a more natural approach" in general, at the time she and her fiance bought their Sharon home, in 2010. "And I wanted natural bath and beauty products. I just wasn't happy with a lot of the things that were in most of the products that were out there," Sousa says. "A lot of them are advertised as being natural, but still include a lot of ingredients that I don't really feel comfortable using. I think a lot of people don't realize what's in a lot of products that are out there. "I really wanted to start making my own things so I knew what was going into them." …
