Young Winter Track Teams Open Season Saturday

Eagles face Foxboro at Franklin High.

Young Sharon High School boys and girls winter track team open their seasons Saturday against Foxboro High School.

The boys squad will feature six seniors: Josh Arons, Luke Fisher, Matthew Goldberg, Derrick Mann, Vladimir Nere and Will Ostrow.

The girls squad has four seniors: captains Sara Gildersleeve and Caroline McClain, and classmates Meaghan Perry and Kelsey Sullivan.

Both meets start at 9 a.m. at the Franklin High fieldhouse.

The boys lost to Foxboro last year. The Eagles finished the season 1-8, the victory coming against Bedford.

The girls team, meanwhile, tied Foxboro last year, en route to a 2-6-1 record. The wins came against King Philip and Stoughton.

The teams' coaches are: throwing, Alan Conway, in his fourth year; sprinters, Tim Cimeno, in his third year; hurdles, Jennifer Cunningham, in her second year; and distance, Phil Sinrich, in his first year.

For the boys, Alan Conway expects Arons and Nere to be the Eagles' top sprinters.

Arons is a captain.

"I think he's going to be a really strong competitor this year," Conway said.

"That's what we're expecting."

In long distance, three juniors will lead Sharon: captain Michael Dupuis and classmates Ben Ryter and Danny Scribner.

Ryter and Scribner were cross-country captains this fall, Conway noted.

"A lot of the long distance kids ran cross-country, which is normal," he said.

"I think we're going to be competitive. Oliver Ames is probably the top in the league. I think we're going to be very competitive against Foxboro."

Junior David Dones is Sharon's best shot put thrower. Sophomore Matthew Perry will join him in this event.

"Again, we're young," Conway said.

"We didn't do that well last year. I've seen improvement already, so hopefully, we'll score some points."

In the hurdles, junior Xander Bennett returns after being new to the sport last year, Conway said.

"He really came on," Conway said.

"He got some points for us last year, so I think he's going to be improved."

For the Sharon girls squad, Gildersleeve is "going to be our sprinting star," Conway said.

"She's been outstanding ever since her freshman year," he said.

"I think she's going to be a high point scorer for us this year."

Fellow captain McClain will do the middle distances for the Eagles. She was a cross-country captain this season, Conway noted.

Perry and junior Jessica Oknin will lead Sharon in the distance events.

In the hurdles, junior Meri Kushner competes indoors for the first time.  However, she qualified for the states last spring, Conway said.

Sophomore shot putter Anna Fratello also should do well this season, he said.

"She just missed qualifying for the states last year as a freshman, and she was brand new to it," Conway said.
