Vandals Strike Geese Control Light at Sharon Beach
The incident happened last Thursday.
Vandals have struck a new light at Sharon's Veteran's Memorial Park and Beach designed to keep geese away, Recreation Advisory Committee Chairman Gary Bluestein said Monday.
The incident was reported to Sharon Police at 3:44 p.m. last Thursday, according to the police log.
"Unfortunately this was our fears in installing a unit that is easily accessible but it was worth a try," Bluestein said.
"The Rec Dept I am sure will look at and decide how to proceed whether with a new one or another method such as fencing or chase dog."
Recreation staff installed the AwayWithGeese units at the Memorial Park and Community Center beaches earlier this year.
The 26-inch high units emit light that will "deter the geese from congregating" at the two beaches, Town Administrator Benjamin Puritz said in March.
Puritz spoke as the board of selectmen and the board of health discussed addressing times when Lake Massapoag's bacteria counts increased. Geese and dog droppings are believed to be contributors.

Never thought such an animal existed, a person actually liking to step in the goose poop spread out along the pathway...in the lake..the bandstand lawn.....the Ames street playground fields, the high school, baseball, softball and football fields...so...NO, I don't believe many folks actually do like the geese at the lake!

Perhaps if were allowing dogs to be walked along the path, it would have deterred the vandals from even trying.

In a way, Sharon brought the goose problem on itself. Years ago there were "Judas Geese." They were held in pens to lure migrating geese down for dinner. Their descendants are the ones we see about town.
We should remember that the geese were here first Leave the lakes and ponds to the geese. Nature is so messy! We can always build indoor pools for ourselves, guaranteeing a more antiseptic environment...until our immune systems collapse to lack of immune challenges:

I thought they were called "Toller" Geese. We should have an organized hunt in the fall and harvest all the geese then have them for holiday dinner....just as was done for many centuries here.

Actually the preferred recipe for eating Canadian geese is to put the goose into a pan with a brick, cook thoroughly, throw away goose meat, eat brick.

I live on Lake Burton in North Ga and have tried everything. The only thing that worked at keeping the geese off my property was a product made by Edgewater Fencing. It was very inexpensive, humane and super easy to install. The people were also great to deal with and we got rid of our nuisance geese!!
