Sharon High Concert Band Will Lead Seniors on World Tour

The students will perform at the COA's Valentine's Day Party

Sharon seniors won't be serenaded with love songs during their annual Valentine's Day party Thursday.

However, the Sharon High School Concert Band does love playing for the seniors. And the feeling is mutual.

" I think it always means something. It isn't just Valentine's Day," Sharon Adult Center and Council on Aging Executive Director Norma Simons Fitzgerald said Monday.

"Valentine's Day can be such an emotional time for some people, whether you're with a loved one or whether you're alone.

"The kids who come are so phenomenal and so enthusiastic."

Thursday's party at the Sharon Community Center ballroom starts with coffee and pastry at 10:30 a.m. The concert band performs at 11 a.m., followed by a cheese pizza and salad lunch at 12:15 p.m.

Guests will receive a candy treat. RSVPs were due Jan. 30.

Sharon High Band Director Timothy McGee said the 60-member band has played for the seniors on the second Thursday in February for the past four years.

"The kids enjoy doing it. The seniors love hearing the band," he said.

"It's a great way to connect with the community."

The concert will have "trip around the world" there and include five songs, McGee said: "Bolero," by Ravel; "Morning in Madrid"; "The Old Red Mill"; "Through London Streets"; and "Highbridge Excursions."
