Two Sharon High School varsity girls soccer players have been named Hockomock League All-Stars: senior captain and goalkeeper Jordan Greenberg and junior defender Samantha Alves.
Alves, also named soccer captain for her senior year, was named an All-Star for the second time, Sharon head coach Jon Lavien said. She made the team her freshman year too.
"Jordan and Alves are major reasons we made it to the state tournament," Lavien said.
The Eagles finished the regular season 10-6-4 and seeded No. 17 among 22 teams in the 2011 Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Girls Soccer South Division 1 tourney.
No. 16 Mansfield defeated the Eagles, 3-2, in a preliminary round match at Mansfield High on Nov. 5. Alves and senior Haley Cremer scored for Sharon.
"This is our first time in 16 years," Lavien said, adding that "their teammates were also a big reason."
Lavien said Greenberg had 10 shutouts, and four games where she allowed just one goal.
"Alves scored 13 goals this season with three assists and was the leading scorer on the team," Lavien said.
He said she also missed four games because of a concussion.
"Pretty impressive in the big picture," he noted.
Sharon High School Athletic Director Robert Sondheim said "they are both very deserving."
"Greenberg is one of the finest goalies in the Hockomock League this year," Sondheim said.
Sondheim called Alves' scoring prowess "pretty amazing."
He said half the time she was on offense and the other on defense and then had to sit out four games because of a concussion.
"She plays both offense and defense because she's the strongest player on the team," Sondheim said.
